I’ve figured out a way to use a portable boom box to generate a thump. I use the Soundbrenner app from the Apple App Store (there are several similar metronome apps,) and turn the app on through my IPhone. With the boom box on the deck and the volume on medium, it thumps pretty loudly, and seems to bring the fish in well. I’d love to hear what the guides think about this setup. It vibrates well also with a boom box that has a strong bass component. The app gives control of the speed and type of thumping.

Necessity is the mother of invention sir. If it works and does not pull a lot of power from a finite on board source, user friendly and inexpensive- well done !

More specifically, I use an ion boom box that uses a rechargeable lithium ion battery, though any boom box that has a good bass speaker would work. I use a metronome app called Soundbrenner. This app generates a rhythmic thumping sound (musicians use metronomes to keep a rhythm.) With the iPhone connected to the boom box by Bluetooth, or you could use a cord, you can make the thumping sound come through the boom box speakers, and with the boom box on the boat deck, the sound and vibration go into the water. I’ve used it on a fishing pier also, and caught more bass and crappie compared to fishing without thumping.

Redneck's will always try to make it work for less. I am without a doubt guilt of having the redneck "gene". Unfortunately probably more than one.... Tried it and it works better than not having anything else. Seen a friend just last week holding a rod and bumping it on the deck while he was fishing next to me, works. Sound travels.. I made a 12v thumper with a geared down servo motor with a hammer and it works well.. I think the key is the speed of the thump..

I use my blue tooth for thumping. I put it in a ziplock freezer bag and toss it in the lake beside the boat. Tied off of coarse. Works pretty good. I have an app that I build my own on? Lol. You can record your own thing on there, and adjust the tempo on the fly., but, I am not a guide, just a guy that likes to fish. I made a post awhile back on here with some pics of my graph.

I tried the Hydrowave before I built my thumper because I saw a guide using it. I never had much luck with it (and a hydrowave with a thump chip is not cheap) so I sold it and built my own thumper. Once I realized how well it worked, I started building and selling them. I have sold several hundred and have multiple guides using it across the US, so I will say its proven effective cool

Hands down the easiest, least expensive , most user friendly, quickly adjustable, simple to repair on the fly thumping system(s) out there !
The group I fish with here in W"ford have been thumping to catch fish for over 9 years. First 7 were manually , then purchased Bobo thumper. The difference is night and day.

Thanks Gborg! I have no idea how many I’ve made and sold. 25 states has to be a thousand or 2.
Whatever works for different folks.
Most people have found and prefer actual mechanical produced sound vibrations that penetrate the water column faster and further than recorded sound.

I was partial to the hydrowave concept because it didn't add a bunch of noise pollution to peaceful fishing but the thumper out performed it effortlessly . I have wondered if the metronome - smart phone idea would work with a 8 inch speaker that could be submerged but I guess they don't make anything like that , that can be submerged . I thought it would be nice to get a quieter thumping experience .
