They eat any and all types of fish in the lake. I catch em on drum, carp, Buffalo, sunfish, you name it. When I fish up in Oklahoma I catch sandies, striper, bass, crappie on a rod and reel and use those. I always throw a variety of big baits and Shad are often the least productive. Not exaggerating a single bit. Big blues like variety and they often are after the fish that are eating the Shad instead of the actual Shad. I had a big fish burp up 3 small drum last trip. I’ve had em spit up sandbass onto my deck numerous times and even a small Cormorant. When the smaller fish throw up on deck it’s usually threadfin but when those toads puke fish up they are often 7-12” fish. It’s this exact reason why I pull big baits that are that size. I try and throw 3 varieties of bait and they generally have a preference of 1 over the others on any given day. I always have some big Gizzard Shad on hand but I don’t start fishing until I have a variety to offer em.

We are catching a few yellow bass while crappie fishing,I was thinking about using them, but they are considered game fish here in Texas. I didn’t know that until I looked atTPWD website today.

Bluegill, and cut Drum have worked for me. Always wanted to try carp, heard it also works well, but have never caught one.

Hopefully can catch some shad tomorrow. My Bluegill hole that's been rock solid, paid off with nothing today. Water was cloudy, so I'm assuming some goodies got washed in, and they aren't starving anymore.

I cleaned an 11 pound blue once and it had a 9" crappie in its stomach. They are apex predators and they will eat about anything including other catfish. The laws being what they are here in Texas we can use shad or shad...haha. I think bream are ok too but I have always stuck to using shad because I've always had success with it...

Yep, they'll definitely eat a crappie on the regular. Sand bass too. Some places you can use them. I think in Oklahoma, you can use just about anything, as long as you caught it on a rod and reel.

Until we get the shad die off here in Alabama, I'm using cut bluegill. I also downsized the bait. Instead of using half a fish, I use 1/4 of it.
Ask bbqking how to become a member of the Fishin' Nut fan club.
