 Is too much thrust a concern?

I finally went from my little 8 foot 2 man boat to a 17.5 foot nitro about a year ago. I am still upgrading things but have a question. It currently has a motorguide 48# thrust TM that has done me well so far but I want to step into spotlock world. Planning on a Terrova or an Ultrex. the real quaestion is should I go 24V 80# or stick with the 12V 55#? When using spotlock while crappie fishing, will the 80# be too much or is that even possible? Looking for some input as I do not want to buy more than i will need but also worry about battery life a little so leaning 24V. Next will be bow electronics

24V is what I would recommend. It will do well with that sized boat.

It will do well with that sized boat. x 2.  x3 i have a 19ft bass cat , could of bought a36v m.k. months ago [used] but opted to go 24v, would have have to get innovative with space for 3rd battery not to mention getting another on board charger.The 24v 80lb. does fine on it. My thoughts. Be sure to get one with long enough shaft, the bow will get to bouncing in a good wind. Which seems it happens A LOT when i get to fish, lol.

A 24v motor will allow you to stay out longer.

Thrust is the horse power. Voltage is the fuel tank.
More thrust will move you faster. More voltage will move you farther.
Only real disadvantage is accidentally falling out of the boat because you had it set on high and hit the switch!

I have a 17.5' light aluminum boat and I have been using a 65# maxxum. Just got an 80# Terrova, I doubt I have to get over 20 or 30% often, but I also don't think it will be over powered since the 65# was fine. I will let you know in a couple of weeks when I get off again. In a heavier fiberglass boat 80# shouldn't be a problem at all.

24 Volt was one of the best upgrades we ever did on our boat.
I also agree on the long shaft...we have a 60" on our Ulterra.
Nice to have it when you want it.
