I have a 2004 Yamaha 300 on my 20' bass boat. Noticed that the rubber slot where the ignition key goes was "melted" . When I touched it, the black melty rubber transferred to my hand. The key was covered with the melty black rubber also. My garage where I store it is insulated and never gets over about 95°. The engine always starts with the first turn of the key. Do any of you know what might have caused this?

Have you sprayed any oil or lube in the key hole or done a good cleaning on the boat where something got sprayed in the area? If not you might have something else happening, and you switch is heating up? Loose connection maybe?

Sounds like a chemical reaction from a cleaner or bait attractant.

TBird, A friend looked at it & thought the same. I just don't know what that liquid / chemical was. I use Bass Boat Saver on the fiberglass, but it's supposed to be OK on most anything. Any ideas?

I did recently have vinegar out to clean water spots off the lower part of the engine. Maybe I spilled a little while mixing with water. I bet that's what happened.
