I've seen variants of that trick. It probably would have been easier to push the cork into the bottle with a screwdriver or a sturdy stick.
But I have a corkscrew on the Swiss Army knife I always have on me.

Champagne with plastic stopper not bad but watch out when it flies off!. Great on NY Eve but will sneak up on you and make a real bad hangover. Goes down smooth.
