In 1978 and 1979 about 8 million Walleye fry were stocked in White Rock yet no one has ever reported catching a single fish. Their initial thought was to put in 5,000 per acre as they thought with murkier warmaer water they will not reproduce. TPW thought the walley would eat the over abundant yellow bass but sounds like the tables were turned before thay could mature.So the yellow bass ate the Walleye fry?? Seems so Trying to figure how to get story from my phone to post on TFF.

I asked TPWD about future Walleye stockings at PK, since they stocked them in the past. I was hoping for something that would stay in the lake if we get floods and the flood gates open, as the stripers head for the ocean once they feel the current. TPWD said no more Walleyes in Texas, as they had to buy them from Colorado and they are expensive. I think it's a shame as I think they might do well in some of our lakes especially PK.

TPWD did stock some smallmouth in PK and I am seeing them in the shallows already.

Walleyes do not make it through the summers here. Odds are, they stocked them and they died off naturally when the water got hot. Especially a shallow lake like white rock. I would bet parts of the lake were close to 100 degrees in the summer.

They can survive the summer in a lot of Texas lakes

We used to fish for them in Lewisville by the old party cove area near I35 back when they were stocked there, it was rocky deep water.

Cypress Springs got stocked also, Knew a guy who caught a pretty big one and had it mounted

They gave em a try at GVine back in the 70’s - I caught one small one, heard about a few others.

Amen. They survive just fine in Lakr Murray just across the OK line. They will do fine in some TX lakes.

There's a good population of walleye in Lake Meredith north of Amarillo.

in the 70's they also stocked tiger musky. it was a learning process and they were not worth the cost vs survival rates.

Wheeler Branch is literally across the street from my house. Small(200 acres), deep(85’) clear and cool weed filled waters. Still has a few left over walleye and smallmouth survivors. “A few”. Probably the best walleye opportunity south of the Red River but I wouldn’t go “target them”. Head up 287. Plenty of Panhandle lakes have Walleye populations. Heck, when I was a kid there was a big billboard at Cypress Springs heralding the lake as “Home Of The Walleye”( another taxpayers “FAILS”!!) in the late 70’s/early 80’s.

Only one I ever caught came out of Squaw Creek years ago. Did they ever develop a population?

No. There was a small group of fisherman that targeted them and would catch a few. They are so rare now I believe it’s just a matter of time before they are gone. Same with the smallies.

My bad.I thought your question was about my aforementioned Wheeler Branch Reservoir I live across from. They are caught occasionally still from Wheeler Branch. Squaw Creek? NO. Smallmouth, walleye and hybrids were stocked when the lake was inundated in 1977. They thrived in the rocky, cool, clear, deep (100ft+) waters. When the power plant came online in 1990 the cold water species quickly disappeared in the 100 degree water. Hybrids? I think the state just stopped stocking these sterile “put and take” fish? People don’t realize how close Wheeler Branch and Squaw Creek are to each other. I can actually see Squaw from a few blocks from my house:

That was the original Texas lake that was stocked.

All the other lakes in Texas were stocked from Meredith , TPWD used gill nets and traps to catch spawning fish. They would strip the fish of
eggs and milt at the boat ramp. Mix and stir with a feather , then take to the hatchery, TPW even put walleye in Lake Palestine. foolish , but I guess they
had to dump the fry somewhere.

Meredith was a super fishery in the 70's when it had plenty of water.

The smallmouth at PK have to be small. Like 6 or 8 inches. I hope they continue to stock them 43,000 isn’t many for a lake as big as PK.
