My question is what makes it good? I want to find the answer to that. As I've found, there are a huge number of lures that don't cut it and many that do well in most situations and seasons. I fished with a buddy who had a load of lures in three boxes he took along during tournaments and didn't know how to use or evaluate 99% of them. I used to be the same way until I noticed certain lures outperformed most others of the same type. Many of the ones I've modified have done better.

multiple fish bite it.

Cut with her golden oars the silver stream,
And greedily devour the treacherous bait.

Sure, labeling a lure action as flutter tail, twitch tail, wobbler, darter, do-nothing, in a particular size or size range and many others may be for me to identify actions that excel at the moment or on that day, but when they work time and again, it's proof of their superiority within that class of lures.

In some cases, particularly in crankbaits, identical lures in every way perform differently and to borrow someone else description that lure hunts, and it painful when one like that is lost. Kut tail worms is a blast from the past, I had a lot of success on those on a shakey head.

On hardbaits there are too many variables to be able to figure out what makes one particular lure great. In the earlier years with the production machines used, say only 1 in 500 lures produced were perfect. With today's equipment maybe it has gotten better and 1 in 50 are perfect. Perfect being buoyancy, weight, sound, color, depth, action etc. All is perfect. Maybe the one favorite of yours that catches fish dives to 12' or even 8' and it is advertised to dive to 10.

Many people today pay so much for crankbaits that they expect everyone to be perfect straight out of the box. Many of the old school pros tuned every lure before it ever touched the water. Even changing hooks alters action and buoyancy if you size up. Old pros would shave down the lip of a crankbait or tune it to run right or left instead of straight so they could make contact with stumps as it passed by. Maybe add a drop of paint or nail polish to enhance color. I remember reading an article where David Fritts won a tournament and credited the win the the crankbait he used was slightly sun faded. He said he had many of the same color, but this particular one was given to him at a tournament as he was leaving and he hung it from his rear view mirror. He said after about 6 months he got tired of looking at it and threw it in the boat.

Spinnerbaits are the same way, change blades, head shape, color even trailer size and shape alters action and depth.

My dad went to a seminar one time where Rick Clun was speaking and he recorded it, man I listened to that tape hundreds of times. After listening everytime I went to the lake I had a buzzbait holding it out the window at 55pmh so that it would squeal when I tied it on and tossed it at daylight. Did it help? I caught fish on it, but I had confidence that it would because Rick Clun said it would.

Thad Raines on here used to post some good articles before his passing. You may be able to search for more.

Good reply Capt.

I guess most anglers don't have the time or the inclination to see what makes good lures tick. But one thing I've been able to
prove is that I must have confidence in a lure to cast it in certain situations and with certain retrieves. Once confidence is high, I can
then use the lure to search areas way beyond where I'm standing and in many directions. Finding fish by catching them is #1 and
catching fish consistently on specific lures #2. At least in my boat.

I think presentation plays a huge part and color is next. Little things like adding a feathered hook will make a difference but, I just think your presentation to the fish is going to play a major part in getting the bite.

Excellent Topwater2 !

No doubt presentation makes or breaks an outing - especially if a lure or lures is wrong for a presentation. Water color/ clarity is key to my color choice/ brightness, but as in your feather trailer example, lure action is dependent on the presentation. Each of these lures as small as they are do better with certain presentations unique to each and have caught bass, catfish and panfish.:

Note: The two sticks do well with a wacky-jig hooked presentation as long as the lure twitches on the way down or at a certain depth.
The pointed tail lures and the small stick do well with slight rod tip twitches causing them to dart either mid depth or hopped off bottom. Haven't tried them on drop shot rig yet.
