For an offseason project, I recently acquired an old tiller steer, 15 foot aluminum Sea Nymph, model TX150 Tournament, with 15 HP Johnson for dedicated use on a flat water chain of glacier lakes that’s home to bass, muskie, and panfish. The lake chain is mostly restricted to 10 mph. For reference, she’s a 1992 model and outlined in red in the brochure.

The hull is in good shape and floats bone dry. She was manufactured in a county that’s home to more than 100 glacier lakes and she’s never been on a road trip; she’s always been on the same chain of natural lakes. The longtime owner turned 80 a few years ago and his wife began to limit his water adventures to their pontoon that’s easier for him to access as it floats all summer tied to their backyard pier.

The Sea Nymph has always been under cover but she’s been sitting for a couple of years and needs some TLC. I plan to go through the motor, replace the deck and outfit her with a small trolling motor and maybe a simple fish finder. The transom feels solid but I suspect I’ll replace all the wood in the boat when I pull the decks. If the foam is wet, and it usually is, then I’ll remove and replace it. I’ll also rewire her. I don’t plan to go Tiny Boat Nation crazy on the restoration, just spruce her up for summer glacier lake fun.


Hoping the tribe might have some ideas on what bow mounted trolling motor I should get? For background, she has a 6 degree v-bottom with v-bow. Her side depth is 21 inches. Transom height is 15 inches. Her beam is 63 inches and bottom width is 42 inches.

Since I’m replacing the top decks, I’m considering keeping the small raised bow trolling motor deck but removing the raised casting deck and turning her into a stick steer. Then again, I might rebuild her as is and keep the tiller steer configuration. A year or so after she was manufactured, Sea Nymph came out with a panfish stick steer model that was basically the same boat without the forward raised casting deck. I’m a longtime stick and rudder pilot so I’ve always been a fan of stick steer boat models on small, speed restricted water.

Thoughts appreciated. Especially appreciate guidance on what trolling motor and simple electronics the tribe would suggest.
