I was going to hit Fayette this weekend, but I went last week and reading about how it’s “on fire” made me look at some other spots. I hate fighting crowds and there’s a LOT of rude guys on the water when it gets crowded. I thought about hitting the bays and seeing if the big specks were chowing down on mullet, so I checked out all the gear on my Hobie Pro Angler to make sure she’s seaworthy. DAMMIT. The rubber fins are in lousy shape. One has the tip ripped off and the other is split in a couple of places. Years of abuse on oysters and just plain age have had their terminal effect. I ordered a new set and figured I’d stick to freshwater try chasing some whites and wipers on Somerville. That’s always fun. So I prepped the boat, bundled up in winter clothes to fend off the bone-chilling drizzle and cloudy, gusty weather and headed out. Found some bait balls, started trolling, and before long was hooking into some fish. No monsters, but it was fun to have the water almost to myself and my thermos of hot coffee. My work just announced major layoffs (Merry Christmas, mofos!!!), so I may have plenty of spare time in 2021 to fish. Hope you got out and got some this weekend!

It was a fun trip. Made me wonder why I don’t chase whites and hybrids more often. So I’ll be spending some more time getting to know these little buggers a little better.
