I’m upgrading the electronics on my boat, and want to ask your opinions on side imaging on the bow unit. Is it useful/effective and is it worth the extra expense?

Extremely useful, especially if you fish lakes with a lot of docks.

You'd be better off getting Livescope or one of the Humminbird/Lowrance live sonars releasing soon than side imaging. You have to be moving in a straight line at 1-3 mph for side imaging to do you much good. I have it and think it's a waste on a trolling motor.

I'd recommend it! Although right now I'm troubleshooting my current setup because my 1199 up front won't read DI or SI and can't figure out why.

I have it and rarely use it... I should've stayed with DI on the bow... Oh well, live and learn... Dan

I use my mSi on the bow every time I am out.

When I am not fishing I am thinking about fishing. And mostly what I should have done differently my last trip!

The built in transducer on the Ultrex or Ulterra is just for DI right?

US2 is universal sonar. The sell a DI built in as well as a DI/SI built in option. My only concern with that is when they have a new transducer in 1,2,3 years then this “old” built in transducer will be in the way of mounting a newer one. So in that respect maybe the “built in” maybe not the way to go if you are planning on keeping your trolling motor and boat for a while. Just my two cents..

I have a Helix 9 at the bow, a Helix 12 at the console and an Ultrex all networked together. By doing that I can use my bow graph and select to use the main transducer at the rear of my boat which allows SI. I use it probably 90% of the time on a split screen that also shows 2D sonar from the ultrex transducer.

yes, learn what the image is showing you and it is a great tool. I rarely sit in one spot so scanning the bank or docks etc. is useful, now have livescope as well and can now cover pretty much everything from the tm forward with both.

as for ducers and trolling motors, garmin is modular, ducer goes out or you want an upgrade it just swaps out and they come with the uhd/si/di ducer installed.

one reason I swapped over from birds.

Downscan is a waste of screen space.
