Just a reminder,...

Crappie
For black and white crappie caught from DEC. 1 through the last day of FEB., there is no minimum length limit and all crappie caught must be retained. From March through November, minimum length is 10 inches. Year-round daily bag limit is 25 crappie in any combination.

Just out of curiosity, why do they do that? Just too many?

I could be wrong but I thought it had to do with a higher mortality rate from being reeled up too quickly in deeper water.

So you have to keep everything you catch but are still limited to 25?

Catch 25 and go home?

Typically this time of year they are really deep by now. If you catch one and reel him up their air bladder expands.

You pitch back let's say because they are under 10 inches or maybe you are looking for the real big ones and want to throw 11 and 12 inches back. Because their air bladder expanded if you throw them back they can't get back down and then you have fish floating on the surface.

That's why they have you keep them no matter the size during this time frame on Fork.

Let's say you drop down get a 12" Crappie.
Next a 9" Crappie.
Next a 6" Crappie.
Next a 1.25 pounder.
Etc. Etc. Etc.

Yup have to keep them all and when you hit 25 you are done.

Other Lakes the 10" rule still applies.

It's also why many go to 3" baits or bigger to keep the small ones from grabbing it.

Good reminder Jim Sr.

For what it's worth, you can find fish in the 20-25 FOW water range that won't have the issue in my experiences. The law still applies but when we have found them in that water, they were all large and none had air bladder issues. They don't all go real deep but a lot of fishermen do. Either way it's a great time to find hungry crappie. And yes, catch your limit and go home regardless of size. Those GWs are watching ya.
