I’ve been putting out a little brush around the dock where my boat is parked, my neighbor had a square bale of hay sitting on top of his trashcan, first question will it sink? Second question will hay attract anything?

Don't bother with the hay and just stick with brush. That is all you need to draw in crappie.

A dry bale will take about 40 lbs to sink. After it's soaked, less weight of course. About the only fish it draws is a few minnows and mostly carp when it starts to decompose.

It's my understanding that the type of cover you sink determines the type of alge that adheres to the cover. Slimey = bad, non-slimey = good. I believe hay = slimey along with soft woods. That's just me though. Good luck.
I would rather die finding out there was no God than die finding out there is.

Does anyone put brush piles in Lake Lavon? How about Lake Ray Hubbard?

People do put out lots of brush; however, it is technically not legal on most corp of engineers lakes. I saw two guys get busted on Ray Roberts. They had loads of brush in the boat and the officer was writing away.. Other lakes, Palestine comes to mind, they are not so strict. Try calling the COE office for your specific lake.. This is from the Lake Lavon COE website FAQs: https://www.swf-wc.usace.army.mil/lavon/faq.aspQ: Can I put a Christmas tree in the lake to bait for crappie? A: No, fish attractors are not allowed to be placed in the lake.

Just don't do it at the busiest ramp in the middle of the day on a Saturday in July and you should be fine.
