I have a question for the catfishermen on here. I’m wanting to fish for cats bigger than just 2/3 pound fish. I can catch little ones all day on my bass rigs, or crappie rigs for that matter. I want to catch some blues in the 5 to 20 lb. range. There’s a lot I need to know and I’m learning some of that on here, but I’d at least like to start out with the right info on tackle.

Do you guys use braid for your main line ? Mono for your leaders ? Feel free to tell me what your setup looks like. Thanks for your help !

El Gato is always willing to share info. There are many others also, he just came to mind first.

I use braid on one or two rigs, but mainly mono on all mine. On a baitcaster, if you get any kind of backlash, it's a for sure knot with braid. Mono is a lot more forgiving. I use braid on my suspended rigs.

Guess I’ll chime in since Littlewheel volunteered me. Lol! You can learn most of what your looking for here on the forum in previous posts. There a lot of experienced guys on here who are willing to help but be ware, there are also a number of inexperienced guys on here who “think” they know a lot but never seem to have any big fish to show for. You can also go to catfish edge and learn just about anything related to catfishing and it will explain why when and how much better than most of us can. Asking about braid or mono will usually ruffle a few feather too. Braid if you anchor in timber and need to control a big fish from wrapping in the trees and mono helps load up the rod if you drift. The standard drift rig is a santee rig and we all rig em a little different. I pull planer boards most of the year and my main line is 30 lb big game in solar collector green. Leader is 60 lb big game. I use a 2-3 oz slinky weight. 8/0 circle hook is optimum for the size fish your wanting to target and 10/0 if your around a lot of fish over 30 lbs. Big baits = big fish. Feel free to ask me anything you want. I’m not a pro or a guide but I stay on em good year round. texas

When I moved to Alabama, I went from Lake Lewisville type fishing to Tennessee River type fishing. Two totally different worlds. I subscribed to several YouTuber's who fished the Tennessee River. Their information helped me immensely. For example, in the summers on Lewisville, I rarely went below the thermocline, which was usually around 25'. Here in the summer, I'm fishing depths of 70' or more.

Thanks guys, that’s the info I was looking for. I’ve always been a big game fan, most of my bass fishing reels are spooled with it. That gives me the basics of where to start. Much appreciated !

I use 30# mono for main line and 50-80# leader. Santee rig. 8/0 circle will be fine. Palm size to hand size baits for those unless I am going for monsters. Several budget friendly rods out there to get started with, ugly stick, pro angler, etc.

Once you get the fever for big cats you will want to upgrade. Haha. It’s an addiction.

I took your advice and watched several Catfish Edge vids this afternoon. Good education ! Thanks, and thanks to Shannon for “volunteering” you. smile

I personally like a lighter main line for casting distance. Just beef up my leaders.

I you like Big Game, you'll love the Pro Spec Chrome! I'm still working on a 1# spool of 20lb test in the Blaze Orange. Like that Hi Viz for line watching when I'm soaking baits from the Bank. Which is all the Time roflmao

I'd Tack That!!
