As much as I would like to see texas fire another coach and the michigan Harbaugh mess is entertaining stuff to I think the colleges should take a different approach. I think they should force losing coaches to coach through their contract. Basically tell them that we are gonna let you show your arse to the whole world and when the last day of your contract ends you need to pack your things and leave quietly. Actually having to show up and suck at your job for the whole world to see seems like a lot better motivator than getting a multimillion dollar buy out then heading to the espn booth for a year or two till people forget and getting another big payday. Make them wear the mess they created for as long as possible.

Not to steal the thread, but I was pleased when Kansas hired Les Miles. I figured he would hire qualified assistants, bring in some decent recruits, and set the direction of the program.
I cannot fairly judge due to Covid restrictions...but the team playing TCU Sat night was epically bad. Lack of effort, bad pursuit angles, poor blocking, worse tackling, and broken coverages everywhere. Throughout the year, their play has not improved...it has gotten steadily worse.
Kansas has become the “Bad News Bears “ of college football.

My opinion of les miles is with the talent pool he had at LSU he got very little. That's just my opinion, they were a top program for years for sure but I still contend a really good coach wins a national title down there every 3 to 5 years.

Let me add pilot that I thought he was a bad fit to begin with because he was used to recruiting the top tier athletes, guys that are nfl players. Kansas isnt that and probably won't be, the key to them being competitive is the scheme and finding the types of players tcu, tech, etc go after. I might be missing something but I havent seen Les Miles ever run a finesse, pass type offense like I think you have to do in a program like that.

WAWI your statement might be ok but if it was a couple years ago y’all would still have Sumlin . And Texas would still have Strong I don’t know about that idea but really who am I to say it might make a difference.

Coaching in todays world of the " instant results Alumni" would have prevented greats like Bobby Bowden, Bo Schembechler, Woody Hayes and John Wooden from flowering into the history books of great coaches because of their early failures. it took Bobby Bowden 22 years to win his first of two and the great John Wooden 16 years to win his first of 10 championships. Nick Saban started head coaching in 1990 and didn't win a national title until 2003 at LSU, he did bounce around a lot, but once he did get to Bama it still took him 4 years to win his first of the 5 that he's won at Bama and the one he's going to win this year unless his team gets the Covid during their playoff stint.
If your lucky your recruiting and philosophy will hit in 4 to 5 years, if not you better at least have a winning record our your sorry [censored] is gone cause we are not going to wait for you to learn how to coach.

The problem, like most things, is the money involved. Back in the day the school was hiring an employee as the coach, but today it is an investment in revenue. The most Woody Hayes ever got paid was something like $50K. Hermann is getting $5.2M and Harbaugh receives $8M. Unfortunately for guys like this, Saban and Sweeney have set a high bar. Saban got a Championship in something like 4 years at Bama and Sweeney got his 1st Championship in 7 years.
Courage - knowing something will hurt and still doing it. Stupidity - knowing something will hurt and still doing it. That’s why life is difficult

Les should have been fired within 5 minutes of losing the national championship to Alabama in the super dome.

The only time Les Miles sounded good was in a discussion of used cars.

I don’t know if it would completely fix the issue, but I think your plan would work better than the current one. We wouldn’t see any five year deals right out of the box like we do now, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. The guaranteed millions if you get fired needs to change, too. Sure, it’s embarrassing to get run out of town, but as you said, they get millions then go talk football on TV before getting the next job. That’s comforting for getting fired.
And the Les Mies story doesn’t look to be as good as Hugh Freeze at Liberty to Mack Brown at UNC. Both of those programs look night and day different than they ever have. I didn’t even know Liberty had a football team until this year, and I grew up in that region. Les Miles has been overrated for as long as I can remember.

Most coaches go from "the best thing since sliced bread" to "Toast" in about 3 straight losses.

I have been saying this. If you sign them for 5 play them for 5. Stick their nose in it until they win. Hire a coach you believe in and back him until his contract is out. In college I think you need to hire older coaches at least 45 that have seen some stuff and can build a staff.
