Well....I went to Fayette this morning and I have two words for that. Those two words rhyme with Duck Fat.
I have no idea if I ever got bit because WIND
I knew better, but i went anyway.
On the water at 7, off by 930. I was shocked to see so many boats out there. I was even more surprised to see guys trying to fish wind blown points. The words "wind blown" are quite an understatement.
I don't remember the water temp at Fayette, but they were working so I would guess 71-72ish.

So, I stopped at Bastrop since it's on the way home. Also windy AF, but at least there was some place to get out of the wind. I went to one of my favorite areas that I knew was somewhat protected and tried to toss a white fluke, but even protected the wind just moved my line everywhere and I had no control so i picked up a watermelon/red fleck rage tail without success. About 5 casts in I asked myself why I'm even trying to work anything soft and picked up a shad colored square bill....AND WE'RE OFF! I stayed in this area for about 3 hours while the few boats that were on the lake came to see if I was still there. Got buzzed at one point, but I'm not sure it was intentional. Still kinda irked me. If you were in the red/white single console you know who you are. At one point a couple of guys moved into the area as I was further toward the point. Watched them catch one right away, then struggle to get bit after that. Meanwhile I kept catching.

Finally they turned off there so I moved to another spot and let the wind push me along the bank. These fish were a little larger and had plenty of fight. A few times I thought I had a much larger fish

30 some odd fish later (I only keep a rough count because frankly I don't really care how many) my arm was tired, my batteries were weak and I was hungry. The bad thing about Bastrop is yeah I had over 20 fish, but I have MAYBE 35 pounds total.

Bastrop water temp 67-68, surprisingly clear given the rain yesterday and wind today. visibility 3-5ft.

I didn't lose him at the boat. I shook him off cause I didn't want my hands to get "fishy"

For many years I was gigging every weekend and simply couldn't drag my butt outta bed in the morning. When covid shut that down I made a vow to fish every chance I got. I've kept the vow, even on days like yesterday. I actually don't mind fishing in the cold, but the wind makes things really difficult. If you like country/blues check out Spilled Whiskey Band's music. We put out a CD called "The First Round" which is a mish mash of originals and covers. My lead guitar player wrote and sings two of the more bluesy songs (you can easily tell which ones they are) and my bass player sings one of the covers. Kevin Fowler, Pat Green and Roger Creager all graciously allowed us to cover their songs....for a fee, haha. The rest are songs I wrote. Hope you like it.

Alabama Takes Me Home is a DAMN good tune. It's also my favorite...then again Nick, the writer/guitarist is a pro from Nashville, so not really surprising. Glad you liked it!

There's a spot on bastrop where the bigger fish consistently stack up.

I have two spots I can go to for bigger fish, but can't get to them now because of hydrilla. Guessing those two spots aren't the one's you're talking about.

Well, well, well. Another "fishin musician"! Looks like we have a couple of things in common Dad! Checked out the band...nice! Love hearing original music. That's why we moved to Austin!! So you play guitar or drums? (so I'll know which one you are)

I didn't play any drums on the CD, but I use to get back there live once in awhile and my drummer would come out and play guitar. I mainly wrote, sang and played rhythm....and goofed off. Glad you liked the music.

I was planning to hit Fayette tomorrow, but I've heard Bastrop has been fishing very good lately. Maybe I'll save the extra drive and hit Bastrop.

Well there will be more than likely both parking lots full of tournament boats there.

My buddy and I fished Fayette Monday. We caught 20 between 7am to Noon. Most consistent bite was Trigs in the timber. We caught a few others on drop shot along the rocks. Bite seemed to turn on better later in the morning.

Planning on going to fayette this weekend. Any tips or ideas what the bass are doing? Is it worth going? Thanks in advance.

Saddle up you and everyone else will be there. I'd fish wherever you can find an open patch of water without a boat on it. Worst time to fish Fayette is Jan-March because it just gets pounded with tournaments.

I agree, but name a lake that isn't!

Just one more cast!

Sounds like I'll just get in line and fish. We all don't use the same baits.

Im just grateful that so many of the fish are in the slot at Fayette. Minimizing the handling of the fish because they cant be hauled around in a live well is the only thing that has saved that lake.

Went on the 23rd. Caught a dozen all on sub points. Biggest about 5. I used to think the white pelicans were cool but I am now thinking they are having an effect on fishing. They are all over the lake.

Thanks, is there any grass left or did the freeze kill it all?

I picked off grass on my lure only once. Also the lake is the lowest I have ever seen it. Front of boat almost grounded on Oak Thicket courtesy docks and sides of boat could go under the bumper boards. Came across rocks and stumps that were never visible before. Anchored in a cove and the mud left on the anchor was very rancid.

We have picked up a few bass this winter that were pretty scared up...I am thinking it is Pelican aftermath. As far as the low water, they started raising the water level throughout the month of March last year...hoping for the same this year...

I was at Fayette this last Sunday I mistakenly went to Oak Thicket.
I was worried when I tied my boat up at the courtesy dock. The water was so low that the side rails of my bay boat were able to float under the dock. I had bumpers in the boat that I hung from the dock cleats. This kept the boat out from under the dock.

This was only my second trip to Fayette and meant to use Prairie launch I found out later.
I fished for just a few hours with Carolinarig brush hog with no bites swapped to cotton candy lizard and started catching in 8~10 ft of water off the riprap near the plant.
The lake was rough quick and I promised not to be gone all day so I went home.

I can bet that FCL was tough with the wind today. It was blowing out of the north at Lake Bastrop. Rough going.
