We have a nice fan palm and hibiscus that I would hate to lose in cold weather and due to my ignorance. How and when should we protect these from winter weather?

Thanks!

The most important thing to do is to water the roots before any hard, dry freezes.
Freezing weather with precipitation isn’t nearly as damaging

What to do now—add a whole munch of mulch.

Options to do prior to December 15
The hibiscus is easier—put a circular wire fence (quick, cheap chicken wire fence or similar) around it to above plant height Then wrap around and over with

You could dump some hay, straw, leaves or other light, grassy material in the plant enclosure for added protection

For the palm, wrapping n burlap is popular or

Chicken wire fence around the bottom of the trunk with hay or straw dumped in there would help the palm tree also

Stringing incandescent Christmas lights around the palm tree trunk will keep it warm also.

Thanks CCTX! I put a sheet over each of them tonight but I could have done better by making some type of frame.

I have 2 fan palms that are over 20 years old. We have never done anything to protect them during freezing weather.
They were supposed to be miniature, but they are now about 10 feet tall. I don't know anything about the hibiscus

Good Luck,
Bozz
