Since I have asked a few questions lately about Sheldon, I thought that I would post my own responses. Took a little solo trip today for about 3 1/2 hours. The water was crystal clear and about 65 degrees. I would say that the lake is "full" since the water level was just below the spillway. I tried flipping cedars, throwing a popper, throwing a frog, spinnerbaits, swimming jigs, and soft swimbaits. I never got a bite. BOO! I spoke to a few people that had been successful catching a few fish, so they were biting. I could not get as far around the east perimeter as I normally do because of so much piled up dead vegetation.

I just don't understand the ramp. I know that when they dug this bowl out, they piled the dirt up around the banks. I have a question for you guys that have been fishing this big pond for a LONG time. Have you ever seen so much water there that it was more than the spillway could handle and the lake was filling up? I wish they would cut down the d### ramp and make it more user friendly. It is such a pain; especially when you go by yourself. Anyone that goes to Sheldon knows what I am talking about.

It was originally going to be a naval ship yard if I remember the story correctly. But then tpwd took it over or aomething lke that.

When I am not fishing I am thinking about fishing. And mostly what I should have done differently my last trip!

You have to remember that all of these lakes were built for water detention or retention, not for fishing. So they will spend little to no money making improvements for fishing.
You would have better luck propositioning TPWD that if you raise the money, will they make the improvements.

The original dam, completed by the federal government in 1943, furnished water for war industries along the Houston Ship Channel. Water was pumped from a station on the San Jacinto River and stored in the reservoir for release as needed into a freshwater canal. After the war, the facility was declared surplus and was transferred to the City of Houston. - tshaonline.

Me? Only one on that last trip. They are definitely there, though.

What’s the deal with the ramp? Have never launched a boat there.

The ramp goes over and down the dirt embankment around Sheldon. You back your boat/trailer up the ramp, then your boat/trailer goes over the embankment crest and then down, you lose sight of it and then your get to the top of the ramp so can see your boat. trailer. It's weird to me, no matter how many times I do it.

Drive over there and check it out. You have to see it for yourself.

I know what you mean about getting out first. You can't see the yakkers if they are down at the bottom of the ramp. It really helps if you have someone with you, too.
