This is by far the most productive setup I've found for the TX stocked trout in/around the DFW area. Since some people have asked - here is my setup. With 4 poles out on this setup for 2 dads, 3 boys, and a little girl - we caught 25 trout in ~1.5hrs of stocking. This rig is almost too effective - when it is just me fishing, I rarely use it because it takes any fun/challenge out of the activity. With that said if you are going with kids this is a fun easy way to fish with them - especially as it is even easier to "see" when you have a hit then with a bobber given that the indicators are much closer and not prone to moving.

REMINDER - you can only fish 2 poles/person on community lakes/bodies of water!!!!

The Gear
1) Pole with reel of your choice, spooled with 4-10lb line (I prefer 4lb)
2) rod holder/brace of some sort
3) Size 10 hooks
4) swivels + bumpers (optional but help)
5) 1/8 or 1/4 oz sliding weights (I prefer non-lead/steel) can also use split shot
6) Mousetails (bubble gum or chartreuse)
7) Indicator (bobber or cork setup)

The Setup
1) place weight on main line >> bumper
2) tie swivel on
3) tie 18-24" of leader (4lb) line to swivel
4) tie/snell hooks on - I prefer offset hook with slight bend on eye and snell them on.
5) hook on mousetail in either bubblegum or chartreuse (as the best producing colors - though i have used others)
6) cast and tighten line (though due to light weights it will never be "tight" unless you have no wind conditions).
7) place line indicator on and pull down ~12 inches. depending on how fish moves this will either move up or down upon strike - usually up but not always.

Items of Note
1) Your indicators can be to light - I have both foam and cork indicators - I usually use the cork because if there is any wind the foam is to light. You can also use spare bobbers (only partially hooked on) as indicators as long as they can freely slide to let line pull tight or drop down as needed. I am going to make some indicators with a few small nails that will add some weight for those days when it is really windy.
2) Though trout are not really a "schooling" fish - these stocked trout will usually move as a group - so you will tend to get multiple hits simultaneously. At one point today we had all 4 poles in the water get hit within 30 seconds of each other.
3) Mousetails can be hard to find in the area - so you may have to order online.
4) Sometimes the trout just are not interested - though this is by far the most consistent method I've found... lures, corn, other baits have sometimes easily outfished it.
5) you will want some needle nose pliers or a hook remover (I use forceps) - to remove the hooks as trout have small mouths and your dealing with small hooks (and it hurts just as bad as a big hook if you get hooked).

Great info! Mouse Tails are one I keep handy trout fishing Texas ponds and across the border in Oklahoma, too!

That is an outstanding post and thank you for sharing. I have just come aware of these and was wondering how folks fished them. I'm also wondering if the trout are attracted to the yellow head or the whole thing?
