Never had this happen. Suggestions on how to free it up. 1990 Mercury 115. It was working like a gem, and then this happened. I have seen suggestions to turn the flywheel, but that flywheel wont turn.

If the flywheel won't turn you may have a bigger problem than the starter. You may try unbolting the starter to remove it,be sure to disconnect the battery first.

Start by loosening the starter mount bolts and see if that frees up the bendix. If need be, take the starter off. If you are lucky, the bendix is just stuck. Try to turn the motor over by hand with the starter loose. Hopefully.........

If the bendix is stuck/broken, they are easy to clean or replace. On a 30 year old motor, I would replace it.

Let us know what you find.

I think it was a chain reaction. Corrosion on battery cables gave me a vottage drop, and it made the starter struggle. A couple of times this month I turned the key and got nothing, And then changed the trim and it fired right up. I guess it has been slowly failing. So I got the multimeter out today and found the votage drop. Cut a foot off of the negative and positive wires and put new lugs on them. Fixed that. Fired up. Bendix went right down, and now it won't rise, but it spins like hell! i think it is time for a new starter. $450 at Cabelas, and then I see all of these after market starters on Amazon for $60 to $80. ANybody used one of those. $450 for the part only is a load of money for an old motor.

Before you buy a new starter take the bendix off and replace the spring or at least flip it over. If i was closer I have a spring kit I would give you.

You can try one from Caltric but I would suggest you use another manufacturer . Caltric is a poor company to deal with.

I can tell by looking at it the spring is an issue

I am going to try to fix the Bendix gear tomorrow. I have an old Johnson Starter that Bought a couple of years ago. Sold the boat as is so I never installed it. But maybe the spring on it will be same size. I will see when I take it apart tomorrow. The actual starter spins fine. Just won't go up and down. We will see.

A lot of times you can flip that spring over and it will work for a while. That way you can get by until you can get a new spring .

Starter is out. Checked Vottage drop through the starter and it is about 1 volt. I think brand new has a voltage drop of .5 but I think it is in the acceptable range. When I turn it clockwise by hand it does go up, but when I hook it up to electricity it just spins. Maybe not enough lube and the bendix is just sticking to the spindle?

We will see what I can figure out. My first time messing with a starter IT was pretty easy to get out of the motor. We will see how easy it is to work on the starter. I have a brand new Johnson starter that I never used from a boat I no longer have. Wonder if the spring is universal. I have never used that starter so those parts are brand new. And I don't have a johnson motor anymore so it is just a waste of space

That top nut is on tight, but I got it off with a big crescent wrench and my ratchet. Cleaned it up. A little grease. Flipped the springs as suggested. I just hooked it up to my truck battery and the Bendix is rising again, So tomorrow I will put it back on boat and see if I am in business. With old boats, you are always learning. Thanks for the tips. Hope it works. Saved me some $$$ if so

If that doesnt work...you can take it to a starter alternator shop..and have it rebuilt...fraction of the cost of a new one...just fyi.
