Good morning. I did a search before posting but couldn’t find anything. I am recarpeting my bass boat. What carpet glue do I use for the deck and the lids? Also paint came off the lids when I stripped the glue off. I am assuming I need to paint them again or they will rust? Any direction would be helpful. Thanks!!

lids should be aluminum, no paint needed.

Outdoor glue. Give it plenty of time before you get carpet wet. No paint,no contact cement, unless your really good at it.

You need heat resistance that ordinary contact adhesives lack. This is what the pro's use. You can spray it on with a cheap sprayer. Weldwood HHR Contact Adhesive

I’ve done my carpet twice (2 different boats) and used 3M spray glue both times with great results. Just have to spray both surfaces and WAIT till it’s nice and tacky.

Twice, I used 3M Contact Adhesive. Paint it on both sides, the carpet and the deck. Wait 10 minutes for it to dry, then put the two together. Sticks instantly, so don't miss.
Holds up very well to water and abuse.
This method also allows you to do just a few inches at a time. Like maybe running a strip down the center of the keel, then working your way slowly out to the gunnels. And real tight places like around the bow or fixtures, you can go just a little at a time.
This is a lot easier than troweling on a thick adhesive and waiting 8 hrs. for it to dry before moving on.
I'm glad there are wine drinkers in this world ..... it saves more beer for the rest of us. Hopper

I have been building all kinds of things in boats that are covered in carpet or vinyl for over 20 years. I have used the weldwood and it is great. I have also used multiple rattle can spray adhesives. And the 3m super 77 and 90 hold up just as well as the weldwood. If you are only doing the lids or small projects the 3m is definitely the way to go imo. But I would go with the weldwood for a bigger project.

Just remember to put the grain of the carpet in the right direction.
