When sandbass fishing, what is a good vertical jig that can be used for someone who is a inexperienced fisherman? I'm thinking for a kid or someone who is new to fishing and doesn't know how to cast.

Those slabs do work good. I hoping that there is a soft plastic bait that I could attach to a jig head that would work. This seems to be the simplest solution for those that are new to fishing. I'm sure guides use this technique.

Do a search through the sandbass forum and you'll find plenty of sellers for such lures. Look for "flukes" or "sassy shads"

I use the bomber slab and tie a constant pursuit thump buddy above it. I also use two thump buddies with a 1 oz weight on the bottom. Those work great. You can deadstick with a 1/4 oz or 1 oz jighead with a gulp minnow or small fluke...

I remember years ago I was fishing for whites with another guy. He was about 12ft from me (fishing out of a boat) and we were both using slabs.
He was kicking my butt in catching fish. I finally asked him what he was doing so I could do the same. We were both doing the same kind of retrieve.
After a little Q&A, I learned that he was using a light action rod & I had a heavier action rod.
I cut my bait off and tied it onto a much lighter action rod and started catching fish a whole lot faster than what I was.

Don't spend to much time looking at what bait to use wink

Can you elaborate? Why do you think the rod made a difference?

Probably can feel the bites more easily with a light action rod. They could be missing a bunch of hits because they can’t feel them with the heavy rod.

Line strength is also key. The heavy line makes a lite bite harder to detect than with lite line. We rarely use anything heavier than 12 lb when dead sticking single jig.

When they are biting the gear, what brand, what size line, how heavy of a rod, what color line is all a red herring. It is more about how to find them and get on them is key. Technique is more important than what slab is tied on and those specifics and preferences.

But as the water is cooling down, I have noticed the cotton cordell jigging spoons are outperforming other similiar size spoons/slabs that I have tried so it has become a big part of my approach now. But again, the method and location is more important than those details in my opinion. When I take clients with me, they will have the same everything I am using but I usually catch half the fish we catch and my three clients catch the other half divided among themselves all because they don't have the touch and finesse that may be required as it is this time of year.

I use to make a big deal out of what rods to use, what string, what reels, braid versus mono, etc....i have noticed it is all less important than many think after taking countless guests on my boat and watched people stand right beside me and catch half the amount of fish.

Everyone entitled to their opinion. The results whether + or - comes from using and catching fish from numerous lakes using the same equipment. Some lakes fish easier , a lot easier than others, whereby rod and line are nebulous.

If you ever get to fish with a high end rod you will definitely be able to tell and feel the difference in a bite. I consider the start of the entry level high end rod around the $200 range. I have two panfish rods in the $400 range and one in the $120 range. There is a big difference in how they feel, bite detection and hook set. I have also some high end bass rods that I drop shot and ned rig with. Bite detection and hook setting capabilities are way better than the same action $100+ rods that I replaced. Now fishing a crank bait or a worm/jig in heavy cover not so much. But my outfits for those are not entry level either. As the guide above posted, practice makes perfect and in my opinion that is why he out fishes his clients using the same everything.
