Did it start all at once or has it been dragging? I put a little oil on mine about once a year. An old buddy of mine years ago was changing his battery. He swapped leads by mistake. The starter would spin but bendix will never rise. Lol

Reverse polarity can cause this, bendix shaft could be sticking and can be lubed with graphite or the bendix is damaged and the kit needs to be replaced

I had that problem... removed and took the starter to a stater/alt repair shop, said it was sticky...needed cleaning...had them rebuild starter while there...easy fix worked great ever since...If you can do basic mechanics starter if fairly easy to remove in most outboards...
