Last year due to illness. weather or schedule conflicts I did not catch a single trout. That is a come down from the glory days when my deceased friend Terry and I averaged a hundred trout in a season.

This year I have plenty of tackle and am ready to hit the water. Bring on the trout!

Newbie to fishing stocked trout:
1. I assume the best time to be there is the day they stock - what time do they usually stock?
2. Since they are raised in hatcheries is best bait some form of roe or trout feed?
3. Prefer to use the fly rod with small flies, but suspect light weight spinning rod with bait that mimics what they are fed in the hatchery may out perform - thoughts?

Being there when the truck arrives is a good time. However the next few days after the actual stocking are good also. The stockings usually take place between 10am and 2pm. TPW cannot tell the exact time. Traffic and weather conditions play huge factors on the arrival time of the stocking truck. Best bait that works for me is the Gold Super Duper Lure and the Berkley Power Bait-Cheese color. Use the small trout hooks. Size 10 or 12. I have seen a lot of fly anglers fishing for the trout and they have very good success. As for the types of flies they use, I do not know. They are a blast to catch and you should do pretty good.


Side Note: A lot of the stocking locations will hold trout into the month of April. You can catch them until then before they die off. The Guadalupe River around Canyon Lake will hold trout all year around.

Looks like I need to dig out the Kastmasters and have some FireBalls sent down from CO. Got the hankering for some fried trout.

No Berkley trout baits or Super Duper lures at my local Academy ! They did have some Gold color Mepps Lures and some Gold Panther Martin Trout lures in stock.

Super Duper's for $9.99 each. What a difference a year makes. Last year i was buying them between $5.69 and $6.79 each. The year before that I was getting them for $3.79 each.
