Texas Parks and Wildlife has resumed their processing of record applications and I received one of my state record certificates from January. This is the new unrestricted state record gray redhorse I caught while Plnor fishing without a reel. Hopefully, for those of you that have submitted records, your certificates will be coming soon.

Giant sucker fish!

Mo, don’t feel bad about not knowing about this fish. I spent over an hour keying it out to species, then sent a picture to the biodiversity center in Austin, just to make sure I was correct.

I caught the fish in the Guadalupe river. There are several species of redhorse found in rivers in the north central states.

There were redhorse in the creeks and rivers outside Hot Springs where I grew up. In the spring there would be a run and folks would snag them.

We used to seine up red horse minnows at the river crossings outside Ballinger when it was running good. Killer trot line and jug line bait since they were so tough. Didn’t know they got that big, probably would’ve just thought it was a skinny carp anyway...
