You made the right decision to not try to get the rod. You can replace tackle but you can not replace yourself. Don't feel bad. I have lost rods and reels several times over the years. It's all part of fishing.  Side Note: As always neat video.

My buddy added these to all of his rods. He said they help a lot when fishing out of the kayak. Rod Float
