Growing up, my dad cooked on an Old Smokey grill all the time. Still a good choice.

Under $100. The Jumbo Old Smokey
Rational:
Price
Size/capacity
Versatility—excellent at grilling and good at smoking
Large distance from charcoal/wood to the food grilling grate
Easy to adjust that distance with aluminum cans if desired or needed
Made in Texas by a Texas based company
Widely available
Lots of easy modifications (adding a thermometer at grill grate level is a must)
Highly recommend making a DIY charcoal basket out of a grill wok/basket with stainless steel bolts for legs or make it out of expanded stainless steel (available at HD and Lowe’s)
Widely available replacement parts

Weber 22" kettle premium with the removable ash tray. Or just a cheap kettle.

Can’t go wrong with Weber; but, Imo, the Old Smokey is a better design. (just not as good quality construction)
The grill grates on the Weber are too close to the charcoal.
I know this Weber design issue is easily overcome with expensive “Grillgrates”

Charbroil works just fine for me. I've looked hard at Oklahoma Joe's. But always replaced mine when it's time with a Charbroil.

#1 selling charcoal grill is the Original 22" Weber kettle. I have the Premium and love it. Great for grilling and low temp smoking.
