Well, I thought I would share an interesting Saturday (Oct. 24). First, I drove over to Eagle Mountain Lake, where I learned to fish for white bass from first wife Radene's Uncle Charlie, and hooked up with nephew/stepson Adam for a day of fishing there. While we were there we seized the opportunity to fulfill promises to deceased loved ones Radene, her brother and Adam's father Jim, and to Greg - Adam's brother and my nephew/stepson. The promise was that we would honor them with a ceremony out on the lake in front of Radene and Jim's parents' home and Uncle Charlie and Aunt Louise's home. So we did that and got a couple of videos, which we will share privately with family.

Re fishing, I know the lake well and we fished for 5 hours and caught one 6 inch yellow bass and had 4 more bites between us. My theory is that the lake is full of 1/2 inch threadfin shad. Even our smallest baits could not entice the fish. Hatch was too small to match. Johnny Stevens, a guide there, says that the last several autumns have been this way - can't find or catch fish.

Next, on the way home I stopped by Academy in Terrell to pick up some American Angler rods. When I left there, I headed east on I 20 toward Hwy 34, which is my turn to the south toward home. I had purchased a Chick Filet meal and was carefully eating it as I got up to speed on I-20. I was doing about 63 mph with boat and trailer behind me. It was dusk and visibility was decreasing. I was in the right lane, and suddenly in front of me in the middle of my lane, I saw a big mattress. There was a lot of traffic moving at 70 mph in the lane to my left. I had a split second to decide what to do, so I swerved to the shoulder barely missing it with my truck, but the trailer hit it. I looked back through my rear-view mirror, and to my astonishment, the mattress had caught onto the finder of my trailer and I was dragging it down the freeway. I thought I saw sparks and was afraid it would catch on fire. The vehicle to my left saw what happened and had slowed to stay behind me and block traffic. I didn't want to stop in near dark on a crowded interstate, but in fear of a fire I slowed and pulled over into the grass beside the shoulder. I got out with cars whizzing by and tried to free the mattress from the fender. It was a huge, very thick, very heavy mattress. It took all my strength after several tries to free it from the trailer, and I struggled to drag it off the shoulder and into the grass. Finally, I checked the trailer for damage - there was none - so I got back in the truck, turned on my hazard lights, and took off. (I couldn't find the hazard light button when I stopped) I got back up to speed safely and got home safely.

But, here is what I realize about the incident. First, God protected me. Thank You, Lord. Second, God used me and the configuration of my vehicle to get the hazard out of the highway and potentially save the lives of others who no doubt would have had an accident with 18 wheelers buzzing around them. God was protecting someone besides me and used me to do it. Wow! Thank You again, Lord, for using me to accomplish your will and saving others!!!
