Had to start a new thread because TFF won’t let me update the old thread title for the previous post. This weeks tip of the week for November 3rd.
Choosing the right day to fish.
I’m a weekend fisherman for the most part so I’m limited on which days I can fish. Like most of you guys I fish whenever I can instead of whenever I should. Over the years I’ve gotten a lot better at choosing the better day to fish and it has dramatically increase my success. Just because it’s bad weather or unfavorable conditions won’t keep me from dragging my boat to the lake but if I have a choice of 2 different days with different weather i definitely have my more favorable days. Here is what I’m looking at when I’m making my decisions on which day to choose.
South wind 10-15 mph days are the most consistent. The more days in a row out of the south the better they will group up. If you have some cloud cover then it’s even better. Mix in 20-30% chance of rain and good wind and it’s almost a sure thing.
East wind days are mostly lower producing days. Barometric pressure is high, wind is low, bluebird skies usually makes for tougher fishing. You pretty much gotta anchor on em and soak some smaller baits in their face or you gotta pull boards and cover a ton of water trying to pick off a few here and there. I’ve hammered em in these conditions but most of the time it’s pretty tough.
West wind is a 50/50. In my experience it’s not a very good bite unless your in the right place at the right time. Whenever you are it’s fast and furious for a short time and then it over. I’ve fished countless west winds and been right on top of fish that wouldn’t bite. Wind out of the west fish bite the best doesn’t hold true for blues for the most part.
North wind days are usually slower days for me. I usually catch fewer fish but the ones i catch tend to be big. The longer the wind blows out of the north the better it gets and after about 3 or 4 days of north wind it can be real good .
These are by no means an exact science and you can have an epic day on any given trip. You can also completely get smoked on what seems to be perfect conditions. One thing is for sure, you can’t catch em sitting on the couch watching football.
One last thing. My most favorite of all conditions is after we’ve had a big cold front blow through. If you can be on the water during that warming trend in between fronts when the wind is blowing out of the south for a few days and another front is approaching, that is when all your dreams come true!
