There's a guy down there that has some house rentals in Zapata. Rent the house, you can cook some of your own meals, and be able to make and pack sandwiches each morning, he has covered storage for the boat that you can park your boat under, and charge your batteries. Go to Tina's for breakfast tacos in the morning, if they are real busy, go to Stripes for their breakfast tacos. Go see the folks at Lake Falcon Tackle when you get in town to see James and he will give you some kind of hints. 8" Watermelon Magic lizards are a must. If you can book you one of the local guides down there the first day so you can get an idea of what baits work best and where the fish are. It's a 30 minute ride from Zapata to the State Park at the dam, but there are some other areas where you can launch as well in Zapata.
Just Google Bassmans Lodging for the info on the fishing cabin rentals

Launching at state park will be problematic by then when they start pulling water. Generally by Feb they are pulling pretty hard.

We always stay at Sunbridge. Never had any issues. Amigo Inn is another good place with a good ramp close by. Here is a link you can check out. http://tackleandrods.com/local/food.htm

I came to Falcon for my first time ever in February of last year. Drove around for three days looking at areas and not finding what I wanted. Finally went to James at Falcon Lake Tackle and got a Mexican fishing license and went to the areas he recommended and caught some great fish immediately. Since I was tired I hired a Guide on the fifth day and we only caught 3 fish, but he did show me some new areas. Knowing what I know now here is what I recommend for your first trip:
1) Get a Navionics Lake Map chip for Falcon and study it before your trip.
2) Get your gear ready to do serious battle with monster fish. Every cast on Falcon is a potential DD/PB and if you hook it in the trees you will have your hands full.
3) Go to Falcon Lake Tackle for your Mexican license and talk to James about the current fishing report.
4) Hire a Guide for the first day, tell them how you like to fish and have him show you around the lake, pointing out good areas to try and obstacles/areas to avoid. Also have him show you how to navigate the Mexican side and the nets / netters. Do not worry about catching fish too much because once you know the general layout of the lake and good areas to go the catching is pretty straight forward.
5) Do not rent anything in the areas known as Siesta Shores or Medina. No matter what the advertising may say, they are the most unsafe and worst areas in Zapata.
6) Eat breakfast at Tina's every day with Stripes as a backup if they are closed. If you eat at Stripes be prepared to hit the shore (US side only) a couple of hours later.
7) Bring a spare prop and trolling motor if you can. A problem with either of these can ruin your whole trip as there is not immediate resources to help.
8) Do not forget about Crappie fishing as Falcon has a great population of large Crappie to take home for eating.

X2 You better be ready for a big one! They will straighten big strong hooks. I've seen it first hand.

I haven't been in almost a decade, I stayed at the cheap motel in Zapata so I can't help you with housing.

Take a kid fishing!

I donโ€™t know, Tinas beans might make you run to the carper even sooner..
