Hey Guys need some help.
I was cleaning out a closet and ran across an old rod that belonged to my Wife's Dad. I had seen it before but had forgotten about it.

It's a Horrocks-Ibbotson Royal Lancer No 4839 Six foot, two part, baitcasting rod. It has LCL - 60 handwritten on the ID label

It's in really good shape. It could be wood but I think it's more probably fiberglass. I'm going to guess it's from the early 1960s.

A Google search doesn't tell me much. I"m putting this here as well because I know H-I was known for fly rods. Can you tell me anything about it?

Horrocks and Ibbetson was kinds of the low end working man's tackle provider of its era. They were in business since the 30s. They were also owned by many parent companies from their inception until they closed out in the early 1970s. You are correct they were known for low end fly rods. Your rod may be bamboo as fiberglass was just getting started in the sixties and was a component in higher end gear. I have an old H&I Montague 5wt flyrod and did a bit of research on the company.

There are lots of HI rods on eBay if you want to get an idea of what it is worth.

H-I was already building fiberglass rods as early as 1951, and maybe as early as a couple of years prior to that. I have a Model 1200 Queen Elizabeth fly rod, 6' 9" in length that will cast a 3 or 4 weight line. This rod cost $20 in 1953, equivalent to almost $200 today, so not all their rods were necessarily low end. Fiberglass was actually quite well established by the 60's, so there were many inexpensive glass rods by then as well as high end rods. I don't know anything about their baitcasting rods.
