This thread is inspired by the smallmouth one. I have never caught a Guadalupe bass. Guadalupe Bass is the Texas state fish, it’s native range is central Texas and the Hill country. What I want to know is if any of the lakes or rivers around the Dallas Fort Worth area or East Texas has them or stocks them, or if I have to drive all the way down towards the Hill Country area to get one.

below canyon dam to new braunfels is your best bet, above canyon all the way back to kerrville if you can find access.

I used to fish it a lot when I lived in comfort, low water crossings with the pools were always good for a few and easy to access.

Lake Travis is loaded with them.

Seriously!? I need to make my way there then. I haven't caught one yet.

Colorado River below Austin is loaded with Guads. Went with Hill Country Fly Fishers for a drift trip last Sunday and caught 50 + bass and majority were Guads to 2 1/2 lbs.

Kayak'd the Colorado river outside of Bastrop this summer. Caught a LOT of guadalupe bass up to about 2lbs. Most of them were closer to 1lb +/-. Light spinning gear made it a lot of fun. Not that bad of a drive from DFW but too far to be a day trip.

the creeks in dfw have a bunch.

I'm not saying there may not be a few Guads swimming in North Texas, but Guads look a lot like spotted bass and there are spotted bass all over the creeks and rivers in North Texas. Last year UT Austin was working on a study to see if the Paluxy had Guadalupe bass in it or if it was just really colorful spotted bass, but I have not heard what they found. If you want to be sure what you are catching is a Guad then head to the Hill Country and fish one of the small rivers there. They are all loaded with them. The closest rivers to DFW that I have caught them in are the Lampasas and San Gabriel.

What we caught were not spots. Guadalupe bass. No doubt about it as posted above. I know the difference.

Lampasas river is the furthest north I have heard about them being reliably caught. Brushy creek in Round Rock is also another option; its full of them.

The Colorado River, Lake Travis, the Guadalupe River, and Canyon Lake are all places on my bucket list I would love to fish at some point. I’ve been down there several times but never got to fish while I was visiting. The desert camo looking pattern on them does look really cool.

Joel McBride, so you are saying the LLELA access point of the Elm Fork Trinity coming out of Lewisville might have some of them hiding in there?
