I got a set of planer boards in a couple weeks ago. I am having trouble getting them to spread out from the rear of the boat. Is there a trick to it I can speed up and they go out just fine but wanting to drift at .5 mph but the just stay behind boat speed up to 1 mph and they go out just fine. Is that the trick speed up get them out then slow back down.

What brand? Are you dragging baits on the bottom or suspended?

Maybe Gato will chime in. He has a lot of experience with pulling boards and different brands too. He made a post about different brands on too long ago. See if you can search for it, he had some good info on it

Just got off the water. Try switching to 2 oz and the should pull a little better. You can use your trolling motor to spread em out. You can also lift the rod as high as you can so that your main line is completely out of the water all the way to the board. This will help reduce the drag from the water pulling on your main line and keeping it from spreading. Once the board corrects its track you can stick the rod back in the rod holder. Boards aren’t going to pull all the way out to the side of the boat but you should be able to get 75-100 ft spread on each side of boat most days. How far do your boards pull out from the line next to it that doesn’t have a board on it?

On a good day 20 feet or a little more the only way I was getting a good spread is to crank the big motor and pull them and then kill it and they will stay out. I will try your way sounds like that may work I knew it had to be something I was doing will make some dragging weights bout half as heavy tks for the help

Rock Creek Planer boards Old #12 is the only boards I will use. Had Spread'em boards also and they do not pull anywhere close to the Rock Creek's. I have no trouble getting them to spread at .5mph. I use 3oz on rods straight out and 2oz on the planer boards. Hope this helps.

Those rock creeks are an exact knockoff of Zakks boards. I bet they both pull about the same.

The center clip is on there for guys that suspend giant baits. Remove the center clip and use the back one for dragging baits. The light stick holder for night fishing is on top of the board circled in red. [Linked Image]

Middle hole is for clipping on suspended baits that are very large. I was told this first hand from the owner and designer of the boards. Remove the center clip and use the back one for dragging baits.
