I started school in amarillo, 1958, we walked to kindergarten with the older kids, like the 2nd graders.

caught a bunch of horned toads back then, at 5 my younger bro and I became arsonists (he was 4) when we let some older kids talk us into something really stupid.

I ask myself why I live here often, but the wife loves it and it is close to family. I can also be on the slopes in four hours and on the water fishing for walleye in 45 minutes.
I woke to snow and 5 degree wind chill, three days of winter weather to look forward to according to the weatherman.

Yep, winter weather advisory then winter storm warning. 21 degrees right now. Nasty stuff coming. Freezing rain, sleet and snow.

Amarillo and the Panhandle ain't for everybody, but I'm proud of my family's heritage there. My Dad's side farmed in the Sunray area, 2 generations. My Mother's side was Lithuanian immigrant and Cooper TX native, they landed in Dumas after WWII. My Grandfather worked at the smelter plant and my Grandma was the breakfast cook at Ly' N Brag truck stop on the north side of town for 50 years. My Stepdad ran the largest commercial feedlot in Texas, Stratford Feedyards. The stories from my Grandparents are something else, many people left that area because it was too rough, some stayed.
If you like your steak, good chance you should thank Amarillo and the Panhandle, 30% of the nations beef and somewhere around 75% of Texas' beef comes through the Amarillo Livestock Commission.

And the pheasant, goose and dove hunting is outstanding.

To paraphrase the late, great, Harry Chapin (he was actually talking about Watertown, NY), "I spent a week there one afternoon."

It certainty ain't for everyone. My great-grandfather worked and lived out at the smelter and was one heck of a baseball player, we still have some of the zinc bars. Once they closed that down he went to work for Cactus feeders and was there 25 years. We always said when the wind was blowing and you could smell all the feedlots, "That's the smell of money."

My family is not from Texas but from Illinois farm country on dad's side. Other side came over on a boat from Europe. I tell the kids about the history so they can pass it on. I tell them that they ought to be thankful for what they have. One grandfather played football with George Halas and the other worked in the steel mills in Chicago. As a Polish immigrant he faced persecution growing up and changed his name to Killian.

You have to be a real man to live in the upper portions of the Texas Panhandle and Oklahoma Panhandle. Snowing and wind chill up that way at 0 this morning. Denver is often a walk in the park to living there.

How about the wind? Or is it just a nice slow snow, big flakes falling straight down? grin
