Wheel was sticking while trying to turn left and then later in the day motor wouldnt turn left when on plane unless trimmed up. While idiling it will turn, but wheel just spins and spins without restriction while on pad and wont turn the motor.

Any ideas? Hydraulic fluid?

You need to fix this IMMEDIATELY. Steering system doesn't just "lose" fluid, you probably have a seal leaking, but whatever, get it dealt with before you go again, because you got a warning, the next time it'll just flop full lock right and you absolutely don't want that to happen. It happened to me, slung me out of the boat sixty feet in 40 degree water.

I've done a few oops in these silly boats. That one was notable. Helping at a boat show in Huntsville AL, some dude showed up with a 186 champ rigged with a 200. Can't drive it, out of control, this things junk, blah blah blah. Looked setup ok, had hydraulic steering, felt ok. Ran it around midrange, it was fine, then lit it up, boat started getting up on pad, when I steered against the torque the wheel went spin mode, and it did a full lock right turn. How I flew over the passenger and ended up in the drink I'll never know. We tend to never forget those sort of things.

What was wrong with that one, Pat? I'd guess a check-valve that wasn't checking, along with low fluid & air. Hydraulic steering is great - when it's maintained properly, and a dangerous gremlin when not!

Don't know, wasn't my rig. It was a while before I wanted to light up another rig with hydraulic steering.
I had a near miss with another hydraulic system, probably two years later, was teaching a guy how to do a demo ride, when we went into the 60 mph U turn, it went full lock and wouldn't come out. Didn't get thrown out that time, but the boat just cork screwed into the water. Now THAT one had Bay Star system with a 150 merc, so for sure I don't trust that steering with a V6, don't care what the box says.
