We wanted to hit the Brazos, perhaps my favorite TX fishery, but my injured bum knee didn't wanna make the haul, so RH it was.

Started with schooling sandies at the boat ramp, about 30 caught before even starting the gas motor. My girlfriend had somehow never seen schooling in the almost 20 years we've been fishing together.

Her eyes got big as saucers upon seeing the surface commotion, and it was pretty lukewarm schooling. I'll have to get her on the real deal on Texoma or the like soon if we can tear ourselves away from the smallies. Replace those yearling sandies with stripers and she'll freak.

The bite was pretty good, 13 largemouth in a few hours, nothing over 3 lb. Best action was along riprap NOT involving roadways and the hump or roadbed or whatever it is (very abrupt rise to 10' from about 20') south of the third power pole below 66 counting eastward from, obviously, the west bank.

The outing was significant in that I used a square bill, a Bomber, for the first time. Dang thing had been in my box for years and I never threw it. The ability of that thing to avoid snags was awe-inspiring, and most of the time it did hang up, a bit of slack would set it free. WOW! I've been sorely remiss in not using that bait more. It caught 5, all under 2 lb.

The game-changer for the day was my BPS Tornado spinner bait, puzzlingly discontinued long ago and one of my favorite lures ever. Slow rolling it near the base of riprap and that aforementioned structure right below 66 was the ticket Thanks, Shoestring! R.I.P.



For the third time in a row, we had a nice meal packed, yet fished too hard to bother with it, so we had another after-fishin' picnic on the sofa while howling with laughter watching Trailer Park Boys.

Man, that's an understatement. I'm trying to learn to talk like Bubbles for comedic fun, but it's easier said than done.

The animated series is downright insane, and the Out of the Park - Europe thing is hysterical. We've never laughed harder at a TV screen. The Oslo episode contains the greatest meltdown I've ever seen, check it out if ya ain't seen it.

You have impeccable taste in tv shows and baits!! I always meant to get one of “Shoestring’s” tornado spinnerbaits. I remember seeing it in the mid-‘80’s BPS catalogs and always thinking I should pick up a few. Here’s to vintage lures and classic Canadian tv, eh!

Hard to beat a slow spinnerbait on rip rap

I think mine came in a regular cardboard blister pack. I've never seen a spinnerbait perform so well. Bass loved it and the shape of the head made it run as true as a BassCat. With a twin tail trailer Zoom Creepy Crawler trailer, it rides high and true at slow retrieves. The fish seemed to literally hate it, in a good way.

Read long ago a yarn about a guy wrapping one around a high tree limb, then leaving the rod hanging from the tree, beaching the boat, driving home with an empty trailer, returning with a scattergun and boxes of shells, and blasting the tree branch 'till it dropped into the drink so he could retrieve the bait.
