Put it in standby mode.
Press the PWr/Light key to access the Backlight dialog. Select Standby and press EntEr. Press any key to resume normal operation.

I leave mine on 8 hours at a time. Only thing it hurts is the battery life.

When I'm on the water mine don't get turned off just when I'm not on the deck I put mine in standby mode as well as if I'm not at the console driving I put that one in standby mode. I know the older units were bad about the crystal in the transducers over heating and cracking if they didn't have a heat transfer source but I never experienced it personally, my old X75 was left on over night but it had a shoot through hull transducer and didn't hurt it. In fact I still use it when running for depth and have the 9ti on full screen map.

Same with Hook 5 I have on trolling motor. I pull the motor up a lot without turning unit off. Depth just goes wacko until I drop it.
