Was planning to head to Port Aransas this weekend to fish around the jetties off of a boat hoping to catch a piece of the redfish run. Forecast, to include wind and waves is still looking great for the weekend. With that hurricane headed to Louisiana at about the same time, do you think the rollers will be coming in from offshore and turn the forecast upside down at the last minute? I was just in Port O'Conner this weekend and the weather at the jetties was beautiful. Saturday morning there were some good size rollers coming is but nothing unmanageable.

Know your limits, know the tides, and follow the weather EXTREMELY closely. Beware of tides and winds going opposite directions. A strong outgoing tide and an SE wind can make the Lydia Ann Channel very dangerous. With the hurricane expected to bring SCA conditions and at least 7 footers to the beach, I'd just stay in the bays. Don't do something stupid and regret it.

I'm not a chick.

Finally making it down this weekend. I cheesed out two weeks ago when the hurricane was headed to Louisiana. I was looking at the wind forecast this weekend and it may be borderline rough to make it out to the jetties. I generally fish POC if I am headed to the salt and have not fished Port Aransas in many years. If the winds are rough, can someone recommend an area to drop in and fish in more shallow protected waters? I would not even be opposed to trailering to Rockport if the winds are bad. Any advice?

You made a good call not going 2 weekends ago. The waves at the jetties are forecasted to be fishable Saturday (between 2 and 3 footers) and possibly Sunday. But there is a cold front blowing through Saturday morning so expect high north winds and high pressure. I would be going after flounder this weekend instead of reds but reds can still be caught with a front moving through. If you launch at Conn Brown islands 1, 2 and 3 right near the ramp would be a good spot and be protected by the north wind. Hog Island is another protected area. I would target the edge of Morris Cummings cut. Sunday the winds are supposed to swing back out of the south southeast. If you fish then the south end of Estes flat would be protected. Usually some reds holding along that shoreline early.

You get out of it what you put into it!

Had a great trip. Best thing of all is my 72 year old father hooked up to his first redfish outside of a guide trip. And if it’s your first one why not make it a bull? Picked this one off the old piling (now submerged) across the channel from the marina on a Carolina rig with live shrimp. To be able to see that man’s eyes light up when we got it on board was more than worth the 7 hour drive each way!
