I'm real partial to Wild Turkey 86 proof for bourbon, but since scotch has entered the discussion, I'll have to cast a vote for The Macallan.
I became interested in The Macallan after reading all the books by the tragically late Rush drummer, lyricist, author, and supergenius Neil Peart. After a show or day of motorcycle riding, he liked to have a drink of the good stuff.
After researching the matter, my girlfriend got me a bottle of the 12 Yr for my birthday. It ran about $65. Then, to settle a football bet, I had to get my right hand man a bottle of 12 Yr Double Cask, about $60.
After we polished those off, I got the 15 Yr Double Cask mostly due to curiosity. About $135.
All 3 were wonderful, and I didn't even know I liked scotch. The high dollar stuff was especially smooth and tasty, with a toffee-like aftertaste. They were all a far cry from the Cutty Sark I used to sneak from my parents' wet bar. The best bang for the buck was the 12 Yr Double Cask. I'm free to behave pretty much however I like for life, but three digits for 750ml of hooch would sit a bit funny with me even if I were a billionaire.
I had some Clyde May's 10 Yr Bourbon at a host's home, it runs about $150, and found it unremarkable compared with my Wild Turkey or Devil's River (a Texas product). It seems spending more doesn't produce the same results with bourbon as with scotch.

It's a really hard bottle to get unless you want to pay 4 times the sticker price. I paid $199 last week....it was worth it .

If you can find it under $150, Old Forester Birthday Bourbon
When you get to the $100 price, you are paying for rarity and popularity/availability
Larceny Barrel Proof for $55 is as good as 90% of bourbons in the $100 price range Larceny Barrel Proof is one of my new favorites!! Been swigging a bit here and there since late July.
