Headed out to Whitney today with intentions of trolling umbrella rigs and finding some stripers. After about 30 minutes of nothing trolling we headed back out to the main lake and came across what looked like a big foam slick that went in hundreds of yards just north of the island. Saw some splashes and thought they were sand bass, turned out to be channel cats. They were right around that white junk(have no idea what it was) eating mayflys and gnats and bugs. Big schools of them up on top of the water, slam a compartment door and they would all scatter like shad. Put on a small weighted float and a treble hook with Danny kings punch bait(good thing I left It in the boat) and caught enough for a good fry. Anybody else see that junk in the water or see anything like this? I didn’t take a picture of it, meant to but forgot to.

We had the same thing as far as the hatch goes at Amistad 10 days ago.

Maybe that’s what it was. Didn’t see any fry or anything in it. The gnats were horrific around it though.

They were great eating last night!

We do a lot of pond and lake management in my line of work. That foam is usually caused from organic material in the water breaking down. It floats and has surfactant properties. When the wind blows it agitates the water and the surfactants in the proteins create foam. It stinks and attracts insects as well. It’s the same process that is happening on the surface of your fish tank when you were a kid. This is common on all sized bodies of water and streams. Some days it can be right out in the middle of the lake and some days it blows up on shore. I went fishing with guide Randall Hall on Lewisville 20 yrs ago and we caught 100 channels in 1-2 ft of water feeding on that foam. I’ve used that trick from time to time over the years and you’ll often see both carp and channels eating that stuff. I couldn’t find any blues on a trip this spring with my son but I did find a ton of that foam blown into the back of a cove so I anchored up and we caught a box of good sized channels in that nasty stuff. They run like trout when you hook one in 6” of water.

That makes a lot of sense. The gnats were horrible around there. Im gonna have to remember this next time i see all the foam blown up against the shore and check it out. Thanks for chiming in good buddy!
