Didn’t catch too many of size yesterday did manage a couple of good ones. But the time of year is here! Just can’t beat a chartreuse and white Clouser. [Linked Image]

There is no doubt about that! I don’t know how many thousands of striper I have caught on the fly, but that fish had an abnormally large tail. It hit when the leader was almost to the tip of the rod and went off like a bolt of lightning! I don’t know that I’ve ever had one make an initial run out that far. That will definitely make your day.

Nice fish. I bet that is a blast!

What weight setup do you recommend for striper? I am new to the world of fly fishing and would like to get a setup suited for bigger fish. Sorry to hijack your thread.

No problem on topic honestly. I have been going with the 6wt. Recently as it hasn’t been a lot of big fish. But you definitely will want to go with an 8 wt. if average size is up. You need the extra backbone and helps with bigger flys.

Second Mr Hunter. My decision process; 1) am I using big flies- if yes, go 8 wt. 2) is it open water or am I in weed beds; weed beds need 12 lb line or better and an 8 wt. 3) size of fish; up to 3 # I can use a 6 wt, but 4# fish can take you into any cover around on a 6 wt.

Yep where I’m at now getting cut off on a rock is the only option. The gin clear water has forced a down size in line. Striper I normally go strait 20 seaguar invisix but shrinking down to 12 improved the catch rate. If your getting 4# plus striper the 8 is must have!! The backbone even with lighter tippet is a big help.
