I am looking at buying a boat in Arkansas that is from a dealer with a 2014 Yam 200 Sho that they are putting a new factory power head on due to a knock in the motor. They are a yamaha dealer also. Question is what else should I ask them to look at or to replace while they are putting a new power head on?
Would you be concerned about this motor at this point?
I am also considering to get this motor flashed. What would you have this motor flashed to with out problems, but more HP and speed?
Hydro tech will be doing the flashing for me.
Thanks,

It’s the same basic motor as a 250, so I’d think flashing it to 250 would be as safe as buying a 250 sho.

As for other things to look for? The reason the motor blew in the first place would be a great place to start. Make sure all the sensors, injectors, and fuel filters are functioning to factory spec, as well as all the fuel pumps and fuel lines. Some of these fuel lines and pumps are crazy/stupid expensive. Some of these hoses are $70-$80 and up, and only a few inches in length. Some of the pumps are rebuildable and one has to be replaced (VST pump), as it’s more expensive to rebuild than buy new as a complete unit.

Just knowing it has new pistons, rings, etc in a new shortblock doesn’t give me warm fuzzies, I’d have to know that the real problem was corrected, not just the result of the problem. I’d also not buy it without a warranty.

I have a friend that took his “new” merc 225 to the lake last Thursday evening. The motor had only been run on muffs. Brand new power head. It lasted about 1-1/2 MINUTES and it was knocking as he reloaded it to the trailer that was still dripping water.

Not trying to scare you. Just wanting you to be aware that the real questions on why it blew up need to be addressed before you accept it as “fixed”.

take it to hydrotec and turn them loose, they got it all gathered in one sock so to speak.
good people, did business with them a few years back when buying an engine.

go to their fb page and msg them, tell them what you want and let them go from there, you won't be disappointed.

I believe I would look else where. If you want a 250, buy one.

I assume you will change the cowl from a 200 to a 250, or a 300, or whatever you end up with, and notify your insurance company that you are overpowering a boat. Not sure what boat you are considering, but since it has a 200, I would assume that's what it is rated for.

Are you “that guy”? Ya know. The one that shakes his finger at guys with muscle cars? Or guys with tuners and dual exhaust in their trucks?

Why is it....AND I AM SERIOUS.....that there is some HUGE SIN to make a boat have 25,50, or even 100 more Hp, but it is ok(even considered COOL) to have a built up motor in a 50+ year old Camaro making 800+ hp MORE than it came with? I have seen more cars with several hundred additional Hp over what it came with....and they drive them on the streets with you, y’all s mamas, and family right next to them.

In 40 years of boating, I have never been denied full coverage insurance on a boat. Even when I had a 17’ Taylor with 550hp.

I don’t get it. I guess. Someone please explain to me why it’s wrong, because I KNOW it ain’t illegal.

....and I’ll go on record as saying I have a TZX190. It is rated at 175 max. I have a worked F150 on it that makes somewhere close to 200hp. It still says 150 on the cowl, so sue me.

An F150 is the highest selling model of four stroke Yamaha ever made. “F” stands for four stroke. 150 is the rated power. TLRC stands for fresh water, 20” shaft, remote controls, 2003.

Yep. I'm one of those guys. I don't like cheating or cheaters.

The difference between hopping up a car and hopping up a boat is that you hopefully don't drive the car as fast as it will go down the highway.

I was hopping up old cars before most of you were born, and know all about it, and all about the the rationalizations we use to justify our actions, so save your breath, and your key strokes.

In many, if not most, jurisdictions it IS illegal to overpower a boat. Knowing the proclivity for law enforcement in Texas, it would surprise me if it isn't.

If you (or I) are involved in a serious boating accident, we will be sued. I would imaging the plaintiff's attorney would be overjoyed to find that boat rated at 200 HP had a souped up motor and was making 300. They will.

I'll promise you the guy, or gal, with the 800 HP Camaro didn't tell his insurance company. Is that wrong? Sounds wrong to me. Stealing is wrong.

If you take the 800 HP Camaro and drive down I-10 or I-20 as fast as it will go, Is it wrong? I' bet it's illegal.

In this litigious society we live in, it just ain't worth the risk to go a little faster.

I never even started on tournament cheaters.

It isn’t cheating. Friggin fool. It is against some sanctioning bodies rules, sure. Just don’t fish the groups that have that rule and you’re ok.

As for the lawyers? Well, don’t don’t get me started on how Texas is over populated with Californians.
