On September 15 Walmart launched their new delivery service to complete with Amazon. I went ahead and signed up last night to try it out. It's $98.50 if you pay in full for the first year, or $12.50/month...once you sign up, you also get .05 off per gallon of gas. You do have to purchase a minimum of $35, but they give you a time frame to choose from to have the items delivered, and it's not just groceries, it's whatever is in the store.

Sounds great, right? Well, I think it's good and all, and I'll probably save $40 to $50 on gas over a year, so that's cool...but when I got notification the items were on their way, they told me I'd have the option to tip the driver once the delivery receipt email was sent....I went ahead and gave them a $5 tip (Walmart assures it all goes to the driver), but the more I think about it, the more I wonder why I should have tipped them.

I don't tip FedEx, I don't tip UPS, the USPS, or Amazon delivery people...so why is tipping even an option for Walmart delivery?

I plan on using it the next month to see how it goes...they did deliver it and put it on my porch, and they called to tell me they were delivering it, but someone else did the shopping and bagging of the products and loaded it into their vehicle (just like the other delivery services). I do tip the pizza/food delivery people, but that's different for some reason.

What says the OT? Tip 'em or not?

I voted no tip because you are paying for the delivery service as opposed to a pizza delivery man...

No. Setting a precedent I dont want. Ever since PizzaHut built the delivery charge into the pizza price, I don't tip the drivers anymore.

I can’t see tipping for a delivery service your already paying for.

They are using their own vehicles. The delivery person today was in a Dodge or Chrysler sedan with a sign on the side of it....

The service is free the first 30 days (same as Amazon), so that's why I went ahead and tipped 'em, but I'll probably keep the service because the gas deduction alone makes it cheap to have.

I think I pay $2.99 (it's something like that) to have Domino's delivered to my work for the student employees, and then tip on top of that. Still not sure why Domino's charges a delivery fee if it's not passed on to the driver as they claim.

Wal Mart has been having Fed Ex delivery for free if you purchase $35 or more. It usually two day delivery and some items is next day.

They have had this in my area for a few years now.

You're right. I forgot about that. I used to get my dog's pills through them and shipping was free. Now I have to go through my vet's online pharmacy and pay shipping. Ugh!

The delivery price is in the pizza. That’s why there is “carry out” specials.

Me too. I prefer it over Amazon because the item price is usually better.

I have noticed on the Walmart delivery that there are a ton of "out of stock" items and most of them are heavier items.

I have also noticed that a lot of the items are definitely more expensive than they are in the store.

I order from Walmart.com a lot and always have $35.00 or more to get the free shipping.

I also order from Amazon regularly and have been a Prime member since they started offering it.

Many (if not all) of the items they sell are more expensive than they used to be when Prime first started and with them charging tax the difference in savings is less than the first few years. frown

Well, they've let me down...

I have had 3 deliveries scheduled so far. The first one went off without a hitch. She was at the very end of the time frame in delivering it, but the lady called, told me she was delivering the goods and placed them on the porch. Most importantly she did not ring the door bell, per my instructions. The second one arrived 3 minutes into the delivery window, dropped them off and left...didn't call or text. Walmart did send an email 3 minutes later. Only issue is I had ordered a fresh salmon filet and milk among my other stuff. Thanks to the Ring doorbell, we knew they were here, so no big deal....

I placed an order today for their only available delivery time 7 - 8 p.m. At 8:12 I received a phone call from Walmart letting me know the delivery driver had been on their way for 30 minutes and still had not arrived. They rescheduled it to tomorrow at 4 p.m. (my request).

They were also out of both Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi in the 16.9 ounce bottles...WTH?

I realize this is just about 3 weeks into the start of the program, but you'd think it'd be smoother than this by now, right?
