Second Mr Hunter. My decision process; 1) am I using big flies- if yes, go 8 wt. 2) is it open water or am I in weed beds; weed beds need 12 lb line or better and an 8 wt. 3) size of fish; up to 3 # I can use a 6 wt, but 4# fish can take you into any cover around on a 6 wt. Yep where Iām at now getting cut off on a rock is the only option. The gin clear water has forced a down size in line. Striper I normally go strait 20 seaguar invisix but shrinking down to 12 improved the catch rate. If your getting 4# plus striper the 8 is must have!! The backbone even with lighter tippet is a big help. Just ordered an 8wt TFO NXT setup. WIll be throwing bigger flies and poppers for bigger pond bass. Will try for stripers eventually.
