I'm looking to get a new truck, which rear end is the best for towing. I tend to haul a 1975lbs boat around. What says the TFF??

From the gear rations you listed I'm guessing Ford. Towing barely 2k pounds I don't think it will make a difference but better off with the 3.55's if plans down the road change and you tow more.

The 3.55 Limited slip with electric locker is plenty to haul pretty much anything you need to with that combination. When I bought my 2015 F150 they were pushing the ecoboost also but i was ademate that i wanted the 5.0. I ended up talking to one of the lead tech's at the dealership and he said if it was his money and going to hang on to the truck for more than a couple of years even though the resale wouldn't be as much stay with the 5.0. So that in mind when i traded (wasn't planning too as I was talked into it) that one in for the 2019 I have now i stayed with the 5.0. I don't worry about fuel mileage as much because the 5.0 especially this 2019 with 10 speed gets as good a mileage as the ecoboost at times.

another happy 5.0 owner.

2014 f150, was adamant that no ecoboost after researching their tow capacity/mileage.

got the 5.0 coyote, 3.55s with off road package (if getting 4x4)/tow package (be sure to get those, suspension is better) with 285/75/18 (33/11.50) and added 5,000# air bags and compressor and use the superchips flaspaq tuner. I towed my 95 champion 202 back from branson mo. and got about 14 mpg, avg. 16 overall normally. I got my package due to also having to pull equipment in for service (side by sides and such) and it tows great. boat is about double the weight that yours is.

for a v8 4x4 you won't find better for towing and you don't need to do any of the extra stuff I did to tow 2,000#, won't even know it is back there.

The 3.5 V6 is really the better option from a towing and performance standpoint and they very reliable, the technology is proven to work without any issues. The 3.55 is the minimum I would go with if I were going to be hauling a lot around, the 3.73 would be even better. With a small boat it wonโ€™t matter but you may never know when you might need to tow something bigger. With the 3.5 V6 you would have no issues hauling up to around 6000 lbs maybe a little more.

Get the 3.5l and you won't have to worry about gearing.

We have a '17 F150 3.5L EcoBoost FX4 SuperCrew with the 10 speed transmission and 3.55 rear end.

It is my wife's daily driver and she averages 20-21 back and forth to work in it.

When towing our Ranger RT188 you don't know it is back there.

With the 10 speed transmission there is no need to go to the 3.73 rear end unless you are planning on towing 9K+ all the time. cheers

Thanks to everyone for their info. I'm leaning towards the 5.0 V8, there's basically no difference in the gas mileage between the 3.5L V6 and the 5.0L V8....plus, I'm a little old school minded when it comes to trucks...a truck should have a V8!!

Only reason Ford still offers the 5.0 is because old codgers still think a truck isn't a truck unless it has a V8. Both will die off in a few years.

That might change this codgers way of thinking, especially since I'm only a codger based on my thinking and not my age.

I don't get why people get hung up on the number of cylinders. A Ram Cummins is a 6 cylinder and probably the best truck engine you can buy.

The benefit of the 3.5l is not the fuel economy. It's the fact you produce a heck of lot more torque at 2000 rpms than the 5.0l does. The 5.0l has to rev to make power. The turbo engine provides a better driving experience imo, especially if you get hills or when towing. With that said, 2k lbs isn't much weight. Either would work.
