 Help with Son's Lost Shimano SLX DC Reel Side Plate

My 15 year old son and I got out early this morning. On his second cast, the entire left side plate assembly of his new Shimano SLX DC reel fell off and into the water. He is heartbroken over it. It was probably his fault for not securing the side plate, but it is gone. I will call Shimano Monday. Anyone have any advice or a contact to get a replacement?
I bought the SLX DC for him as an early 16th birthday present since he is having trouble getting used to casting baitcast reels.

had that happen with a pflugger echelon, called mfg. and they replaced free.
That's over and above good customer service

I called Shimano and the rep said send it in. Sounded like they would try to take care of it under warranty if the latch is faulty in any way.

I got a call from Shimano this afternoon, and they replaced the lost side plate on my son's SLX DC reel at no cost. I didn't expect or ask them to replace it at no cost. We were prepared to pay as the loss was most likely my son's mistake. We are soooo thankful to Shimano and will definitely buy more Shimano reels in the future.

Update: We received my son's SLX DC reel from Shimano today. It was repaired and returned quickly. I am very grateful for Shimano's generous gesture, friendly service and quick turnaround. My son is thrilled to have his reel back and ready to go fishing.

There are some companies out there that understand how giving someone a freebie every now and then will help their company. You post the kindness of Shimano online and hundreds of people see it. This will go a long ways for Shimano.

This will go a long ways for Shimano. I agree and am happy to tell people what Shimano did to help us. It would have been a very expensive, if not cost prohibitive, repair (DC reel). Win - win for both.
