I've heard about them, So school me on steakbeds. Is this just a spawning attractor? depth?, time of year? Is it one of those if you put em in they will come stories? What's the best method to put em in? Best material to make em out of?

YouTube videos will show you the particulars of how to do it and what you will need.
I always liked 5 gallon bucket, sacret, and bamboo.
More work away from the lake but installation goes quick and easy.

We find them a lot when fishing tournaments in the eastern part of the US. A lot of that is because they have a winter "draw down" of a lot of lakes out east. Friends of ours will drive out on the lake beds and build stakebeds on the dry ground, and then fish them when the water comes back up in the spring.
