If you do get a drift sock be sure and put a float on it so you have half a chance of recovering it when it comes loose .

Are we drifting sideways with the waves or bow into or following them? I usually point the bow into the wind and hold/control drift with the TM when bass fishing. My catfishing is usually baited holes with bait or juglines.

I drift out the back 90% of the time when drifting and use my trolling motor to move around and hit my pins where I mark fish. I do drift out the side if the wind is 8-10 mph and were pleasure drifting humps in the summer. Fall patterns are almost here and the fishing is about to get good.

El Gato,

Still very much trying to learn this game, but enjoying it! Do you have any tips when you say "Fall Patterns" that you would be willing to share?

Not looking for your secret holes, or GPS (I will be fishing Cedar Creek)... just some general ideas of depths, temperatures, objects, transitions, drops, creeks, etc. for fall patterns.

Thanks!

We’re all still learning Ken. There are multiple patterns to fish in the fall. Early fall the fish and bait will migrate north and i find them congregating in mid depth areas in 15-25ft and water is just hitting the 70s. Areas like where a secondary channels intersects the main channel are good areas to look. Fish and bait will hang around these areas waiting for cool rain to flow in from the creeks. After the rains I get up in the muddy water and look shallow but i anchor fish then. If I can’t find em shallow I drop back to the next contour change and look for them there. I look in 5ft, 10ft, 15ft, then 20. I’m not saying my way is the best way but it’s how I learned to locate them and it usually works pretty good. Early fall pattern can be tough and it really pays to have buddies on the water sharing intel. Fish can make huge moves with each weather change and some days i can’t find fish to save my life.

The really good pattern i like to fish is after the lake turns over or mixes and we get a couple of good cold fronts blow through, water will be in the 60s and fishing will get better as the water gets into the 50s. Gizzard Shad will group up good in 20-30 ft around the channel and it’s time to start catching big fish consistently. This pattern usually starts mid to late October and is in full swing by mid November.

There are other good patterns like shallow timber or fishing the cormorant roosts but I rarely fish those patterns unless somebody really wants to splat fish.

I will post some trip reports as the fall patterns kick in and let y’all know where I find them. texas

I'm about to get started doing this. What is y'all's preference for bait while drift fishing?

Cut shad, cut bluegill. I always like to have 1 line out with a live bluegill.

Will be with Mr Kennedy tomorrow, again. Really enjoy learning from him.
Taking my father and youngest son. Going to be a great time.

Take care all.
