Congrats on your first kayak.
A few questions.
What type of fishing will you be doing (lakes for bass, lakes for cats, creeks, bays, ECT)?
What kayak did you get?
What accessories do you think you need at this point (fish finder, ECT.)
You get out of it what you put into it!

Learn all the seating adjustments that will make your outings as comfortable as possible. Depending on what kind of seat you have, some will allow you to adjust back support or move the seat forwards or backwards just enough that your foot braces (pegs) will fit perfectly. An inflatable air cushion comes in handy as well. Hard to beat the Surf to Summit Seats https://www.surftosummit.com/collections/gts-series-kayak-seatsTake plenty of water and sunscreen because you'll probably stay a lot longer than you had planned.

First trip out, dump it. I know it sounds odd but knowing how to do a deep water re-entry with a pfd on because you've practiced is a lot different than knowing because you watched a fool on YouTube.

That uhmwpe sounds like a good plan also as it is less than half the weight of fiberglass.. But I'd go with a one inch or thicker uhmwpe rod. Not for durability sake but that stuff is pretty flexible. Too flexible I think at less than 1" thickness. Flexibility is good but you will want it to be firm to give you leverage. Another thing is you could sharpen the end to a point which will help you to use it as a beach anchor in mud, sand, or gravel. without having to drag the yak out of the water to run to the car, campsite, outhouse, or whatever.

A few items I consider 'must haves' and are attached to my PFD at all times: Marine Whistle"River Knife" - Even if you decide not to tether items to your yak it's good insurance to carry a blade that is easily accessible just in case you turtle and get caught in anything. I have gotten entangled in vegetation that didn't look like much but had to cut my way out. Link to a few good ones in all price ranges. PFD light I rarely go out all night anymore but I am out before sunrise and stay past sunset at times.
Grateful for every sunrise and sunset I get to witness. - Jason

thanks for the tips! i was thinking in building a pole just wasnt sure with what.
i did find a place near me selling a 10ft 3/4 in rod for like 22 bucks(uhmwpe material), but what you say sounds cheaper ahhahah Stake Out Stick source built mine using the 3/4" and put a "T" handle made from PVC. Bought 2 clips from Austin Canoe and Kayak and the stake clips easily and securely to the side of my yak opposite my anchor trolley.
Grateful for every sunrise and sunset I get to witness. - Jason

I fished with stake out sticks mostly inshore for years now. I have a big pile of 5' long and 6' long stake out poles I've made sitting in the corner of my garage. I no longer use them. Too much of a hassle for me. I prefer a 5 lb dumbbell (for the Pro Angler I use an 8 lb) set to the approximate depth I'll be fishing. When I see fish, want to fish an area or catch a fish I just reach beside my seat and ease the dumbbell in the water. IMO stake out poles are not the way to go for the type of fishing I do (mostly inshore).

I can see maybe the 5lb, but is not 8lbs quite a bit of overkill for a kayak? I'm new to kayaking so please bear with me as I learn by asking. I have a 14' 8" Fishing kayak.

I only use the 8 lb dumbbell when I'm in my pro angler 14. The pro angler has a high freeboard and I set up high in the seat. Both catch a lot of wind. This is the reason for the increased weight. In my Revo 13 the 5 lb dumbbell is fine for most cases.

That depends, there are a lot of different types of anchors. If you use a dumbell heavy enough you can just drop vertical. I use a Bruce claw type anchor, light weight but the downside is I need 100' minimum of anchor line. Figuring out what you really need is going to come from getting out and using things. I have learned I need 2 anchor trolleys on my freshwater kayak and none on my saltwater kayak. I need to be able to throw a castnet from my boat in freshwater, not so much in salt. The more you get out and do things the more you learn what you really need. Seems to go in phases, first your happy to get a kayak, then you screw, rivet and glue every gadget known to man on your kayak, and in most cases we tend to end up back to the basics.

Watch a video on paddling technique. Should be using legs and torso to do most of work, not arms.

Funny thing...this is one of the unexpected benefits of the Hobie Mirage 360 drives. You can pop that sucker out, kneel down and let it rip right in the hole. With my sonar mounted in the center it just looks like I'm kneeling for a closeup look at my sonar. Hobie's marketing team is missing out by not pushing this benefit. Maybe someday I'll try a deuce through that hole??

Maybe someday I'll try a deuce through that hole?? LOL. You better figure out how to flush first! True story... Many many years ago I dropped my buddy off in a cove and he scrambled over a small hill (to the other side of a point) and grabbed ahold of a small sapling to drop a deuce. Mid deuce, a nice family with two kids (both boys BTW) pulled very slowly into the next cove... The cove that my buddy just scrambled off to. There he was in front of God and every body with pants around his ankles and hanging onto this little sapling....about 45 seconds later the boat abruptly exited the cove I was laughing so hard it hurt. When he made it back into the boat (I was still laughing my arse off) he was all pissy and said "why didn't you stop them?!?" I was able to pause laughing just long enough to say "because of this!" and then burst back into laughter. It was one of those laughs that hurts your jaws, stomach and back... I laughed on and off for hours. It took him half a day before he was able to laugh at it. This was about 20 years ago... He still gets a little pissy when I bring it up. Lol.
