Largemouth bass have beautiful coloration, and the color shades and distinction of their lateral lines varies. Over the years I’ve caught several darker fish, but this one is the darkest.

Caught it this morning under the middle of a boat dock in deep water at PK, one of the clearest lakes in Texas. Some of my best looking fish have come out of this lake. All I can figure is that it has remained parked under the dock for an extended time and the lack of sunlight has darkened it up.

Anyone else catch them this shade/color? The two pictures below are of the “black” bass contrasted with a more typical bass I pull out of PK.

I’ve caught some darker than normal bass and I’ve caught some with dark spots about that color, but I’ve never caught one that dark covering that much of its body.

Caught several nearly as dark as the top fish in a spring fed tannic water 5 acre pond. Always thought it was natural selection over time for the bass to start matching their environs. Strange considering the water clarity of PK

I caught a smallmouth in Amistad that was that black. I have seen them very brown but never black. The underside was gray instead of a more cream color too.

I would bet that bass lives shallow and is in the sun more than you can imagine. All the dark colored bass I have caught have all been caught shallow with clear water. I have never caught a deep bass colored like that and the whiter colored bass always come from darker water both shallow and deep.

Melanistic (dark) pigmentation is a genetic condition. In fish it can be localized (black spots) and influenced by existing conditions, such as water temperature. It results in a really cool looking fish. Congratulations on the catch. thumb
