The first time I ever saw a rod like that was in the mid 80s when the Late Bass Professor Doug Hannon used one in one of his videos. He said it gave him better feel and better control over the fish. It also keeps your line from rubbing your rod when you have a big fish on. I have seen a couple of custom ones like that since then but I couldn’t tell you how well it works. I made a couple of rods for my wife and had thought about doing that with the guides but decided against it.
Have a Blessed Day, Mike

I have one that is designed for crank baits and I can't tell it is better than any other crank bait rod as far as casting distance, which is what they claim it is better for. I would just stick with a rod with the guides on top. The NRX is an awesome rod.
One thing to make sure of if you are going to get a spiral wrap rod, the way it spirals depends on your reel choice, left hand or right hand so when you lay it on the deck of the boat the guides are not on bottom.

I have one that a buddy gave me when he got out of fishing, it even has the micro guides. I can't remember the name of the guy who builds them but It is my all time favorite C-rig rod. What about it stands out above a conventional guide placement? Is it the blank? Or strictly the guides? When you set the hook there is no rod twisting so it's the guides. So are you saying that you can tell the difference when fighting a fish? I would be willing to wager that there are very few (if any) people who have had line break along the length of the rod because of line rubbing the blank. And even fewer that can actually tell you if a rod twisted or not.

Yes, some spiral builders will rotate the spine 90 degrees.
Before I say that spiral setups are unnecessary, I would say that in bass fishing it is a moot point. But whenever very big rods and huge fish like are encountered in salt water I could see where it might come into play as an asset.
Like everything else in life ..... If it makes you feel like it is an advantage for you then by all means use it no matter what I or anyone else says. Confidence in your equipment and it's ability to perform to your satisfaction is all that matters.

I was talking about rods that have the guides on top. Some are lined up exactly with the spine so when the rod is under pressure it doesn't try to twist to the side. When they are 90 degrees off they tend to bow to the side when under pressure. Check your rods and you will see which are lined up and which are not. I have rods that are both and I don't notice much difference landing a fish.

I have rods that are both and I don't notice much difference landing a fish. No need to check my rods. I have always spined my blanks and will continue to do so because it's an easy process. That said, I have owned a few rods that were built by other builders that were obviously misaligned with the spine. They looked a bit strange if you looked down the rod, but fished fine. I think we can agree that no amount of pressure that the rod will endure while bass fishing is going to cause any noticeable twisting unless the blank is trash in the first place.

Yes, Dave Settle at Custom Angle builds the reverse wrap rods. One main thing done is every rod has a natural back bone. Lining the reel seat and guides with the backbone removes a lot of twisting of rod during hook set. The reverse wrap also places the line tension on the guides and not the rod blank during fighting fish. The reverse wrap really helps me when fishing weightless baits. I do like the carolina special rod.

What about it stands out above a conventional guide placement? Is it the blank? Or strictly the guides? When you set the hook there is no rod twisting so it's the guides. Better built “normal” rods don’t twist anywhere near as bad as cheap rods. The better rod companies use 45 degree carbon wraps to help with blank twist and the better companies align the spline of the rod to the guides...further eliminating twist on a load. The added friction of the line forced around the blank through “twisty guides” will cause you to lose casting distance and accuracy. That’s physics and not up for debate.

I bought one back in the early 90's from the old Bass Pro shop in Hurst. It worked pretty well; but couldn't say it was any better than a standard eye.
